DEPORTIVO IN AUGUST

03 Aug 2013
The Segunda season begins in two weeks; Deportivo will play two liga matches in August, plus the Teresa Herrera tournament. The games in liga are against teams called to be candidates to the promotion.

It’s here, the debut at Liga Adelante is around the corner and coach Fernando Vázquez is still assembling the squad that will compete in the league tournament. Many people still asking what will be the goal of the team, the fans dream of a new return to Primera, but the big list of problems within the last months invites to put both feet on the ground and realize that it will be tough to end among the top six places.

It will depend a lot of what happens in the next 29 days as the club must close the squad before the end of the month, the needed reinforcements will bring a more realistic impression of what the goal is for this weakened Deportivo. Besides, the first two games could be a clear indication of what to expect, mainly as the rivals are aspirants to the promotion.

First to all the debuting game against UD Las Palmas; the Canarians are still euphoric after the signing of Valerón and are a candidate to the first places after they missed the promotion last year in the playoffs. They could have lost Sergio Suárez, Thievy and Vitolo, but the arrival of El Flaco plus Bulgarian striker Spas Delev indicates that this team hasn’t lost the quality to score goals.

But UD Las Palmas didn’t have a good pre-season; they were unable to beat CD Tenerife in the Canarian derby playing in a two-leg series playing for the Mahou Cup and their only victory so far was against little UD Tenerife Sur Ibarra. It seems they will need more time to settle.

The second matchday is the first home game for Deportivo after the relegation suffered at the beginning of June facing Real Sociedad. The rival is Córdoba CF, a team with a disappointing second round on the past Segunda season, but that’s trying to build a solid team to fight for the promotion. So far the Andalusians already secured the signing of ex-Depor Xisco and former Girona man Benja, two goal-scorers that should be important players on the season.

Córdoba CF have also captured the singing of Eial Strahman, a promising Argentine attacker was the top-scorer in the second division in Mexico. In any case the Andalusians have missed the goals in their two friendly games played so far, ending scoreless before Sevilla CF and then only netting once –a last-minute penalty- playing against Segunda B outfit Écija Blompie.

August will end with the 68th edition of the Teresa Herrera tournament. The rival will be Real Madrid CF. It’s a big novelty the tournament is disputed at the end of the month, but it was decided like that as the Madrilenians are currently touring in America and are not available on these days. For this reason the game was placed between matchdays 2 & 3. The game on matchday 3 against CE Sabadell will probably be scheduled for September 1st in order to bring the needed space for the friendly game.
