Volatile pre-season for Depor; the team won six of the nine friendly matches, but many of them were played against rivals from lower leagues. Fernando Vázquez used 42 players during the stage, 24 of them played at the youth team on last season.

Deportivo played nine games during the pre-season stage; the Blanquiazul outfit won six of those meetings, it drew two and only lost once scoring 22 goals and allowing only 5. But these stats might be misleading, because of the rival’s level.

And it’s that six of the nine rivals were teams from lower leagues, starting with Club Lemos, a team from the Preferente Autonómica de Galicia that allowed 9 of the 22 goals scored by Deportivo during the pre-season (41% of the total).  Then, three of the rivals were Tercera outfits: RC Vilalbés (3-1), UD Barbadás (3-0) and Pontevedra CF (2-0).

There were two rivals from Segunda B, the league below Liga Adelante, and Depor had problems against these teams, because it only grabbed a 0-0 draw against CD Ourense and then defeated Real Oviedo with a goal scored at minute 85 (1-0).

On this pre-season Depor didn’t face any rival from Primera, but it played against three teams from the Portuguese Liga ZON Sagres; and the three of them were demanding exams for the Galicians. The only defeat was suffered against Rio Ave FC (0-1), a team that ended 6th on last season, there was also a meritorious 1-1 draw before newcomers FC Arouca, good result taking in mind there were only youngsters on the pitch, finally a 3-2 win over Gil Vicente, a team that only ended one point above relegation during the past season.

The team before the game against CD Ourense
Perhaps the most surprising statistic is the number of players used during the pre-season stage: 42. Coach Fernando Vázquez always made a lot of changes during the nine friendly games, just to mention that the game against Pontevedra CF was the one with the lower number of modifications (9).

Also to point out that 24 of the 42 players (57% of the total) were youngsters that belong to the youth teams, including keeper Felipe Ramos, who belongs to Depor B and that played loaned at Valencia Mestalla. The remaining 17 players were part of the first team on last season or instead were playing at the first team of other clubs, including centre-back Stefan Deák, who last season performed at Hungarian club BFC Siófok.

The 18 “senior players” are: keepers Dani Aranzubia and German Lux, right-backs Laure, Manuel Pablo and Seoane, centre-backs Ze Castro, Deák, Kaká, Aythami and Rochela, left-back Ayoze, centre midfielders Álex Bergantiños, Assunção and Juan Dominguez, playmaker Juan Carlos, wingers Bruno Gama and Culio, plus striker Arizmendi. The latter two are the only two signings that had minutes during the pre-season, attacker Rudy had been sidelined with a toe problem, while Polish Cezary Wilk joins the team until today.

Of the twenty-four youngsters that had minutes with the first team, eleven were players that had been training in order to gain a place for the regular season: David Gómez, Uxío, Insua, Sidibé, Teles, Romay, Cañi, Bicho, Lemos, Luis and Dani Iglesias.

The other thirteen youngsters with minutes were emergency solutions in order to face the clash against FC Arouca, this caused by the conflict with the first team players and their unpaid wages. These kids were only used in this particular game.

These youngsters are: keeper Felipe Ramos (returning from loan), centre-backs Jorge Callón (Juvenil A), Róber (Fabril & Juvenil A), Ángel and Enrique Fornos (both from Juvenil A),  left-back Aarón Rama (new signing for Fabril), centre midfielders Adrián Martinez (Fabril), Gabi and Óscar Garcia (both Juvenil A), playmaker Álvaro Queijeiro (Fabril), winger Juanpa (Juvenil A), plus attackers Álex Pérez (Fabril) and Pancho Cotos (Juvenil B).

Bicho & Dani Iglesias, both are 17 and the youngest players during the pre-season stage
Centre-back Uxío Marcos and playmaker Bicho were the only players that took part of the nine matches disputed in the pre-season, the case of Bicho was special, because he was the youngster player making the pre-season stage together with striker Dani Iglesias (both are only 17) and Bicho was the one that impressed the most. He will stay at Depor B, but it’s highly probable that he could have minutes during the Segunda Campaign.

The player with more minutes during the friendly games was centre midfielder Álex Bergantiños: 422 distributed in 8 games. He only skipped the encounter against FC Aoruca. Only other four players had more than 400 minutes on the pre-season: Bicho (417), Juan Carlos (409), Aranzubia and Laure (both 405).

The top-scorer at the team was Bruno Gama, who netted four goals. Other three players scored three goals: Dani Iglesias, Luis and Juan Dominguez, curiously the latter two scored a hat-trick in the first game on the pre-season. Finally, three players made two assists in the period: Luis, Cañi and Culio, the latter after only 12 minutes on the pitch.
