ARANZUBIA LEAVES DEPORTIVO

14 Aug 2013
Dani Aranzubia is leaving Deportivo after five years at the club. He’s signing for Atlético Madrid and the Galician club will only perceive the participation of the Madrilenians in a future Teresa Herrera. The operation will be official on Wednesday.

The exit of goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia was expected; he was one of the players with the highest wages at the club and the administrators were pushing for his departure; actually it was one of the reasons why Lux renewed as the Argentine man was promised to have  more protagonic role at the team.

It lasted, but it was finally confirmed on Tuesday. On Monday the player was in Bilbao and the club informed that he was solving a personal issue, but hours later it was known that he was going to sign for Atlético Madrid, this in order to be the second keeper behind Thibaut Courtois. The Madrilenians were close to sign Getafe’s Miguel Angel Moyá, but preferred the option of Aranzubia, because Getafe delayed the operation as they failed to find a replacement.

He’s leaving for free and Deportivo are only getting the participation of Atlético Madrid in one of the next three Teresa Herrera tournaments. Depor still have to pay him his past wages negotiated in the conflict resolved on July 31. The operation will be official on Wednesday as its pending on the administrators’ signing.

Aranzubia and his famous goal against UD Almeria
Aranzubia arrived at Depor for the season 2008/2009; at the time former coach Lotina was looking for some stability after the fight between Gustavo Munúa and Dudu Aouate. And the ex-Athletic goalie brought that peace as he was the starting keeper of the Galicians for the next five seasons. And it’s that he only missed 16 liga games between the years 2008 and 2013.

In this way Dani is the fifth Deportivo’s goalie with more matches at Primera División (140), only behind historic keepers like Juan Acuña (230), José Francisco Molina (169), Francisco Lliaño (154) and Jacques Songo’o (151). And he was the only one that scored a goal in an official match.

It was February 21st, 2011. Depor was paying a visit to UD Almeria and was losing 0-1 at minute 90. Pablo Álvarez threw a corner-kick at the left and Aranzubia joined the attacking line trying to equalize the game, lucky for him the ball went directly into his path and, taking advantage of the poor mark and the slow reaction of keeper Diego Alvarez, he headed the ball into the back of the net from the penalty spot. At the time he was the seventh keeper in the history of la liga that scored a goal.
