PLAYER OF SEPTEMBER: ÁLEX BERGANTIÑOS

11 Oct 2013
Álex Bergantiños has been named as the best player of September by the peña members of RCDLC.com. The centre midfielder has played also as a centre-back and impressed everyone claiming the first place in 3 of the first 8 official matches.
Deportivo returned to Segunda División with an irregular performance, almost exactly mirroring the start of the previous adventure in this league. Just like two years ago, Depor started the season with 4 wins and 3 losses. Unlike two years ago, on the other hand, Depor have shifted from being a team that both scores and concedes a lot, to a team with a solid defense, but with a serious lack of creativity going forward.
Most surprisingly, two years ago Depor had many troubles on the road , but the Riazor turned out to be an impregnable fortress... But now it is witnessed the complete opposite scenario. In fact, after just four home games, it's already impossible for Depor to equal the home record we had two years ago.
Depor was off to a perfect start, beating one of the main rivals for promotion at their own stadium (1-0 at Las Palmas). But, once again, Depor lost its second game of the season at home against an inferior rival (0-1 against Córdoba). This type of form was going to be continued, with Depor easily beating Sabadell in Catalonia (3-0), but once again failing in the Riazor, this time against Murcia (0-1). Alarm bells started ringing when Deportivo suffered another defeat, at the hands of Sporting de Gijón (0-2), but Depor soon recovered with two consecutive victories against Alcorcón (1-0) and Hércules (2-0). In the middle of these league matches, Depor eliminated Córdoba from the Copa Del Rey after one of the longest penalty series in recent memory (2-2, 13-12 pen.).
Rudy had been top of the standings since matchday 2, but after the final game of September, he was knocked off his pedestal by Alex Bergantiños, the first player of the month. While Depor's season start has been extremely irregular, Alex managed to put in plenty of solid performances on a constant basis. Perhaps he hasn't been the most notable player in the past few weeks, but unlike his teammates, he has never disappointed so far. Even when he had to change position to central defense, he held his own.
