4-1-4-1: THIRD CHANGE IN THE SCHEME

12 Oct 2013
For the third time on the season Depor are changing the draw for a liga meeting; Fernando Vázquez is still looking for the goals and he understands that the first step is to find depth at both wings. Arizmendi returns and claims the spot of Juan Carlos.

Deportivo have only scored seven goals in the first eight matchdays at Segunda, coach Fernando Vázquez knows this is a poor statistic for a team aspiring to promotion. For this reason he switched the classical 4-2-3-1 figure into a 4-4-2.

The first draw was used in the first five games and Deportivo suffered three defeats, then the 4-4-2 was used in three straight meetings and the Galician outfit clinched seven of the nine possible points in dispute, so it was a positive change in the sense that the team remained undefeated.

But Vázquez wasn’t satisfied, especially after Depor were unable to score in the last game against CD Mirandés disputed at the Riazor. He understands that the problem is the lack of depth at both wings and for this reason he’s planning new change in the search of that depth. It means to use a 4-1-4-1 scheme.

The coach doesn’t see it as a radical change as he tested the draw during the pre-season; actually he stated during the week that this scheme was used for a few minutes in the opening matchday against UD Las Palmas.

The main novelty with the new scheme is the separation of the functions between Cezary Wilk and Juan Dominguez. In the previous two draws they were the centre midfielders, now the function is only for the Polish player, while the Galician will have more freedom to attack as he acts like a playmaker joining Culio at the centre.

The rest is practically the same script of the 4-2-3-1, with Rudy and Arizmendi searching for the so desired depth at the wings and with Borja Bastón at the centre of the attack. Vázquez had the option to pick Antonio Núñez for the first time on the season , which is an important factor considering he’s the only natural winger available at the squad, but El Profesor already stated that the ex-Huesca will have his first minutes until the Copa clash against real Jaén. Actually, he wasn’t included in the list for the game.

At defense there are also novelties, Pablo Insua is out on international duty and his spot at the centre of the defense  should be claimed by Kaká, while Laure, Manuel Pablo, Álex Bergantiños and Lux complete the formation.

Since the team travels at Saturday’s noon to Catalonia the coach released the list of picked players on Friday. The novelties are the return of Arizmendi and Marchena, while the two players going out are Bicho and Insua.

Picked players for the game against Barcelona B:
Goalkeepers: Lux & Fabricio
Defenders: Laure, Manuel Pablo, Luisinho, Seoane, Marchena & Kaká
Midfielders: Álex Bergantiños, Juan Domínguez, Wilk, Teles, Juan Carlos & Culio
Attackers: Luis Fernández, Rudy, Arizmendi & Borja Bastón
