THE DEADLOCK OF GERMAN LUX

24 Oct 2013
Deportivo represent the best defense at Segunda División and goalkeeper German Lux established the eighth best unbeaten mark in the history of the club. Curiously the marks were achieved at the time the coach was having problems with the defenders.

On Sunday, Real Zaragoza broke the unbeaten record of German Lux, who had clinched four straight clean sheets in liga before the meeting (facing AD Alcorcón, Hércules CF, CD Mirandés and Barcelona B). In the end the Argentine keeper spent 459 minutes without allowing a goal in liga, which turns to be the 8th best mark in the history of the club and the highest since the season 1994/95 (Francisco Liaño, 676).

And it’s that Deportivo have only allowed four goals after ten matchdays at Segunda, an impressive mark taking in mind the problems lived in the last two seasons when Oltra was the coach at the beginning of the campaigns at Segunda and Primera. The last time the Galician outfit presented a solid defensive performance at the beginning of a season was during the season 1993/94.

It was the era of the” Super Depor” and the five-men defensive line of coach Arsenio Iglesias only allowed two goals within the first ten matchdays at Primera, which included achieving clean sheets against Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and RC Celta.

The point is that it isn’t only a good job of the keeper as Depor’s defense has been looking pretty solid throughout this season, the saves of Lux have been important, but it’s also true that the rivals aren’t creating too many opportunities due to the impressive coordination between the defenders.

In this sense Lux hasn’t been forced to make more than four saves in one single game during this campaign (matchday 01 at UD Las Palmas), actually in the home meetings against AD Alcorcón and CD Mirandés the keeper didn’t need to make any save.

The most impressive thing is that the team is demonstrating this strong behavior despite coach Fernando Vázquez has been facing problems with the defenders. Centre-backs Kaká, Uxío and Carlos Marchena were injured at the same time and the coach had to delay the position of Álex Bergantiños in order to join Pablo Insua.

Besides, the late arrival, plus an injury, for Luis Carlos Correia ´Luisinho’ forced the Galician tactician to improvise at the left-back position, for this reason Manuel Pablo was switched from the right side while Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ as kept the starting role at the other side.
