MATCHDAY 20: DRAWS TO LAUNCH 2014

08 Jan 2014
For the second time on the Segunda season there were five draws in one single matchday, few changes at the top and the bottom, while the situation remains pretty tight as only 15 points are separating the first from the last place.

Once again the first six places were unable to win their matches, but matchday 20 will be remembered for the five draws witnessed during the first weekend in 2014. It’s the second time on this season with such number of draws (it happened before on matchday 11).

Leaders Deportivo could only get a point in one of the two goalless games of the weekend visiting mid-table Real Jaén; the Galicians have only added two of the last nine points in dispute, but it was enough to increase their lead because the second and third place lost their games. On Saturday, Recreativo de Huelva extended their recent poor form with a 0-2 loss visiting Córdoba CF.

The outrageous game of the matchday, and perhaps of the whole season, was the 2-3 loss of Sporting Gijón hosting Real Zaragoza. The Asturians highly protested the job done by referee Santos Pargaña as he sent off three players leaving their team with eight men. There was even a big fight after the final whistle and coach Ramón Sandoval, who was also sent off, showed up to the post-game press conference with a black eye.

The Aragonians seized the situation and scored the winner at minute 89 when the rival was reduced to eight men and after missing a penalty. The result allows them to be among the first six places for the first time on the season.

The other two teams in promotion didn’t seize the occasion and only granted a point. SD Eibar is the new third place, but could have jumped to the second spot in the 0-0 draw visiting falling CD Lugo. Meanwhile, UD Las Palmas wasted a 2-0 lead at minute 50 and ended conceding a 2-2 draw hosting RCD Mallorca (2-2). Aythami Artiles scored one of the goals for the Canarians.

Movers and shakers at the bottom of the table; Hércules CF expanded their winning streak to three games after a solid 1-0 victory over CD Mirandés, the latter club has lost three of the last five games and is in relegation for the first time on the season. The big surprise was Deportivo Alavés as the Basques defeated CD Numancia on the road (0-2). It’s just the second home defeat for Los Numantinos.

The losers this time were Girona FC and Real Madrid Castilla. The Catalans could only get a 1-1 draw hosting SD Ponferradina and are currently the penultimate place after a streak of seven straight games without wins, while the Madrilenians lost their first game with new coach Manolo Díaz in a disappointing 3-2 loss at CE Sabadell CF. They are back at the bottom of the standings.

The matchday was completed with the 1-2 win of CD Tenerife visiting Real Murcia and the 2-2 draw between Barcelona B and AD Alcorcón. The situation at the standings remain pretty tight, with only six points separating the promotion seats from the pit and with a difference of only fifteen point between the leader and the bottom club.
