THE DEBATE OF THE CENTRAL ATTACKER

21 Feb 2014
The penalty missed by Borja Bastón and the late goal of Toché has raised the debate regarding who should be the starting striker. Coach Fernando Vázquez has admitted that he has doubts on the issue.

Coach Fernando Vázquez doesn’t seem open to switch into a 4-4-2 system as he has continued to rely in the figure of a playmaker leading the 4-2-3-1 scheme. Throughout the season the coach has only used once the 4-4-2 as the starting formation for a game, it was for the home clash with CD Lugo (matchday 17).

And the latest performance of the strikers has contributed to extend the debate on who should be the starting striker at Deportivo. Luis Fernández is the attacker with more appearances (24), but Borja Bastón has the double of minutes and therefore has scored more goals.

The Madrilenian had an explosive start netting four goals in six games, but later his performance got worse and Luis Fernández earned the spot. The injury of the Galician put Bastón back in the spotlight, and new arrival Toché landed in A Coruña on last month and has only needed 38 minutes to score twice, including the “miracle” against Sporting Gijón.

Now that Luis is totally recovered the debate is who of these three attackers should be the starter. According to what has been sawn lately Toché seems to be in better shape though he isn’t totally fit to play for ninety minutes.

One of the weaknesses of Borja and Luis is their low percentage of shots on target, while Toché presents a decent 50% on this department. It’s another reason why the Murcian deserves a chance as a starter.

However, Vázquez also sees other things before deciding who should be the starting choice. On Wednesday, he explained to reporters that he liked the job of Bastón during Sunday’s game, ”If the public would judge the performance of Borja in an individual sense, clearly he missed aim and goal, but worked in an extraordinary way and for me this is the important thing.”

Although at the same time he admitted the doubts on the issue, “He [Toché] is closer to reach his natural form. Evidently he needs to play games to reach it, but I would say that I’m thinking of it. I’m starting to doubt. That’s the situation. He’s there. He’s an option that’s there for the starting eleven.”

What happens is that every striker adds different things and the coach has to shape the final figure for each game. As example Bastón is a striker that brings more mark, which is represented by his number of fouls committed, while Luis is the opposite as he attracts the mark and therefore the fouls. Then Toché is the middle point and is a striker more characterized for his positioning inside the area.
