TACTICS: THE PUZZLE OF FERNANDO VÁZQUEZ

07 Mar 2014
Depor’s coach is still trying to find a starting eleven. In 2004 the team hasn’t repeated a lineup after nine liga presentations. At this point Vázquez is testing three different draws for Saturday’s match at CD Mirandés.

After the closure of the winter transfer window Fernando Vázquez has faced difficulties to find a proper starting eleven for Deportivo. The true is that the facts confirm this feeling as the coach has used nine different lineups in the first nine official games disputed in 2014.

He has always used a 4-2-3-1 scheme since the beginning of the games, though he has felt tempted to switch into the 5-2-2-1; actually he even did it in the first half of the visit to AD Alcorcón after replacing a midfielder –Wilk- with a defender –Lopo- before halftime. The point is that, apart from the injury cases, El Profesor has faced problems to find a playmaker that satisfies his criterion, and also a proper combination on the wings.

In the nine games disputed in 2014 he has used five different playmakers, from Culio and Rudy, duo that’s already gone, to recently addition Rabello and the Galician couple of Juan Dominguez and Juan Carlos.

The situation on the wings seemed sorted with the arrival of Diogo Salomão and the reconversion of Luisinho, but Vázquez has lost both players in a stroke of a pen. The first is injured for the rest of the season and the second will be out for a full month due to a suspension.  So, the coach needs to find a new combination.

During the week, and ahead of the meeting against CD Mirandés, the Galician tactician has tested the three possible draws: 4-2-3-1, 5-2-2-1 or 4-4-2. The scheme with two strikers should be ruled out as in the end Vázquez has left Luis Fernández out of the list for the game. He’s traveling with only three attackers then, which makes improbable to see this figure, at least at the beginning of the encounter

The list was released on Thursday’s night, because the team makes an early trip to Miranda de Ebro on Friday. The main novelty is the return of right-back Laureano Sanabria ´Laure´, who received the medical okay to play on Friday despite one week before he was ruled out of this meeting due to an Adductor muscle injury.

Picked players for the game Vs. CD Mirandés:
Goalkeepers: Lux & Fabricio
Defenders: Laure, Manuel Pablo, Seoane, Marchena, Lopo & Insua
Midfielders: Álex Bergantiños, Juan Dominguez, Wilk, Núñez, Juan Carlos, Sissoko & Rabello
Attackers: Arizmendi, Borja Bastón & Toché
