THINKING OF REAL ZARAGOZA

21 Mar 2014
Very negative week for Deportivo in terms of injuries. After the three players with more minutes missed the first session, Vázquez ended losing Toché and Marchena. The rival is also having big problems and just changed the coach.

The ghosts are chasing Depor once again. Ahead of the visit to Real Zaragoza (La Romareda, Sunday, 12h00 CET) the team trained on Sunday without major incidents and then the problems started to show up since Tuesday. On that day centre midfielders Juan Dominguez and Álex Bergantiños, plus centre-back Pablo Insua skipped the training. The first was ill, while the other two were dragging muscle problems from the past game against Barcelona B.

Coincidentally, those are the three players with more minutes on this liga season. In any case the trio was back for Wednesday’s training, but on that day the attention was focused in striker José Verdú ‘Toché’, who didn’t end the training after suffering a muscle injury.

The Murcian attacker was practicing the shots on target when he felt that a muscle on his right thigh had stretched; the scans confirmed that it was pulled muscle injury, which means that he will be sidelined between three and four weeks. It’s an important casualty taking in mind he was the starting striker for the past four games.

And the band news didn’t end there, because on Thursday, centre-back Carlos Marchena didn’t train due to an ankle problem. The doctors will wait for his evolution as it isn’t a serious injury, but it’s highly probable that the veteran player will miss Sunday’s game. The other casualty for the game is left-back Luisinho, who’s serving the third of his four matches of suspension.

The only good news is that Diego Ifrán is already training with the team. The Uruguayan striker joined the trainings since Tuesday after his loan move was completed on last week. In this way Fernando Vázquez has been left with eighteen players available at the first team, exactly the number that will make the trip to Zaragoza.

As it has been normal within the last weeks, Bicho and Álvaro Lemos are the field players of Fabril that have trained with the first team. They were part of the sessions until Thursday, and on Friday they will join the B squad ahead of the game against Pontevedra CF

At Real Zaragoza, the team was a favorite to fight for the promotion seats, but at this point the media and the fans seem more worried with the relegation as the team is closer to the pit than to the first six places. Paco Herrera was fired on Monday after the team lost 2-4 at SD Ponferradina and later experienced coach Victor Muñoz was hired as his replacement. He’s directing the trainings since Wednesday.

There are three confirmed casualties for the game. Firstly centre midfielder Walter Acevedo got injured in the last game against SD Ponferradina; the scans confirmed a strain in the Soleus muscle of his right leg, which means he will be off for six weeks. The second casualty is Chilean striker Ángelo Henríquez, who’s out with a stress fracture.

Also, winger Víctor Rodríguez won’t be recovered in time for the meeting. He skipped the game at SD Ponferradina after been replaced in the previous meeting with RCD Mallorca with a muscle problem. He didn’t train on Wednesday and Thursday and was ruled out of Sunday’s match. Then, striker Roger Martí is doubtful after sustaining a foot injury during Wednesday. The scans ruled out a fracture, but it isn’t sure if he will be available for the weekend.

At the same time centre midfielder José Javier Barkero seems recovered from the endless muscle problems that sidelined him since early in February. Real Zaragoza have been hit by a plague of injuries that have affected the plans for the games.

Besides, the club has been struggling to fulfill its financial obligations and ended releasing or firing five players in 2014: defender Javi Paredes, midfielders Lucas Porcar, José Mari Bejarano and José María Movilla, plus attacker Jorge Ortí. So, there are only 18 players at the first team at this point. It means that, for the game against Deportivo, they will have to pick at least three players from the B team in order to fill the gaps.
