SEVEN ACADEMY PLAYERS IN THE LINEUP

26 Mar 2014
Last Sunday, Deportivo got three important points playing in a tough stadium like La Romareda, and it did it playing with seven players at the lineup that are coming from the academy, the highest number on this league season.

At the beginning of the season it was said that the academy players were going to be important pieces in the campaign of Deportivo; this idea started to fade away as the Fabril’s players started to leave the training sessions and especially after the winter signings arrived to the club.

However, the academy is still present at the first team, perhaps not with young blood coming directly from Depor B, but with players that were in the past at Abegondo’s academy. And that influence can be noticed in the latest victory of the team, which was the win over Real Zaragoza playing at La Romareda.

And it’s that seven of the eleven players at the starting lineup had played before at Deportivo B: right-back Laure, centre-back Pablo Insua, left-back Diego Seoane, centre midfielders Juan Dominguez and Álex Bergantiños, playmaker Juan Carlos Real and striker Luis Fernández.

It’s the highest number on this season for a liga match; previously coach Fernando Vázquez has used six in seven different liga meetings (Tenerife, Recreativo, Alavés, Córdoba, Sabadell, Mirandés and Barcelona B). Laure, Insua and Álex Bergantiños were the players that were present in all those seven matches.

However, this isn’t the record on the season, because the highest number of academy players on this campaign was sawn during the Copa match against Córdoba CF. In that opportunity there were nine players at the starting eleven that are or were part of Fabril: keeper Fabricio, right-back Diego Seoane, centre-backs Uxío and Álex Bergantiños, centre midfielder Teles, playmaker Juan Carlos Real, wingers Bicho and Cañi, plus attacker Luis Fernández.

It’s necessary to go back to the season 1984/85 in order to find a larger number of academy players in a Deportivo’s starting lineup. At the time Arsenio Iglesias was the coach and by matchday 02 there was a strike in Spain affecting Primera and Segunda División. So, the matchday on September 9, 1984 was disputed with youngsters coming out from Juveniles: 2-2 vs. CD Tenerife.

On that day ten players of the academy performed with the first team: keeper Joaquín Pérez, defenders Juan Manuel Varela ´Juanito’, Jesús Suárez ‘Suso’, and Enrique Barbolla; midfielders Luis Vázquez ‘Fisquelas’, José Antonio Vieites ‘Chechu’ and Cipriano Pozas, plus strikers Andrés Ramos, Modesto Mendez ‘Pupi’ and José Castreje.
