STATISTICS: GOOD PRECEDENTS

17 Apr 2014
During this century all the first places at this height of the competition ended clinching the promotion. Contrary to what has been commented in the media, this isnít the tightest competition at Segunda in recent years.

Deportivo is once again the leader at Liga Adelante after last weekendís results. The Galicians have now a five-point advantage over second place SD Eibar and are six points above third place UD Las Palmas. The difference with the seventh spot, the frontier with the promotion zone, is ten points.

There are two good news for Depor analyzing these numbers. The first is that since 2001 all the leaders at this height of the competition ended clinching the promotion; actually the last eight clubs that were the leaders by matchday 34 ended winning the title in the league. The last team that missed the championship despite been the leader at this point was RC Celta (2004-05).

The other good news is that, contrary to what has been written recently, other leaders have faced a tighter situation in the past and they were able to hold on the promotion seat. For example, during the season 2009/10, Real Sociedad was the leader followed by the six chasers in a frame of seven points. But in the end the Basques didnít have any problem to keep the ticket to Primera and also the first place.

For the season 2005/06, Recreativo de Huelva were the leaders tied in points with GimnŠstic de Tarragona, third place UD Almeria were four points away and the difference with the seventh spot was only of eight points. Again the leader at the time didnít have problems to keep the promotion seat and the first place.

And during the campaign 2003/04, CD Numancia were the leaders in a tournament in which the first six places where only separated by nine points. At the time there were no playoffs as the first three places were going directly to Primera. And this time the leader suffered a lot, though there was a happy ending. They passed through a negative streak that started in matchday 34. In the end Los Numantinos needed three straight wins in the last three games to end third and clinch the promotion.
