FABRIL 2013/14: PLAYERS’ PERFORMANCE

14 May 2014
There was a large number of players performing for Depor B on the season, a playmaker turned to be the top-scorer on the Tercera tournament, while a centre midfielder relocated as a centre-back was the lad with more minutes.

Complicate season at the academy, in the case of Deportivo B the injuries and the continuous presence of youngsters with the first team, at least at the beginning of the season, provoked a large rotation, to the point that 31 players had minutes during the Tercera season, including four goalkeepers.

Of this list, there were seven signings and six players from Juvenil A: centre-backs Quique Fornos, Toni Insua and Róber, centre midfielders Ángel Fernández and Gabi Sanin plus winger Óscar García.

The appearance of four goalkeepers should be considered as accidental, Felipe Ramos couldn’t cancel his contract and stayed in the shadows, tough later he made six Tercera appearances. David Gómez and Rodri were called to be the keepers for the season, but the latter left the club in the winter window as Marc Martinez returned in order to cover a punctual problem at the first team.

Taking in mind the poor campaign of the team at Tercera División, it shouldn’t be a surprise that many of the youngsters failed to impress. The player with more minutes was Oumar Sidibé (3,046), a centre midfielder replaced as a centre-back that was hardly criticized for his performance in this new task. This figure of repositioning a player was constantly repeated by coach José Luis Devesa, who served his second year commanding the team.

There’s a special concern with the players considered to be the more promising lads at the team, the ones that made the pre-season stage with the first team, because they didn’t fulfill the expectations. That’s the case of Sidibé, but also of playmaker Bicho, centre-back Uxío Marcos and striker Dani Iglesias.

Bicho was intermittent, always remembering  that it wasn’t an easy season for him as he spent a lot of time on the bench of the first team rather to be playing with Fabril. He stayed with the B team starting in the second round, bur his form was poor. In the end he only played 18 games and his contribution was reduced to one goal and one assist. The same goes with Uxío, who suffered a nose fracture in Copa Del Rey, an injury that gave him many problems in the rest of the season and who was also in low form for the last matches, reason why he ended benched in a couple of opportunities.

But there were good news too, Jorge Romay assumed the responsibility and turned to be the leading force in the creation of game. He was one of the two best assistors (7) and also was one of the main top-scorers (5). Marcos Remeseiro also impressed during his first season at the team. He arrived from CCD Cerceda and lived a hard time trying to gain a spot at the starting formation, and did it in the second round after Devesa replaced him as a ‘false nine’, in this way he ended to be the main top-scorer on the season with ten goals added to his tally.

Among the youngest ones, winger Óscar García and centre midfielder Ángel Fernández impressed with their solvency on the field despite they should have been performing for Juvenil A. Quique Fornos also completed some interesting presentations, some of them performing as a right-back. Among the new signings, apart from Remeseiro, Cańi made a solid job at the beginning, though later he lowered his performance, mainly after he was used as a right-back defender in the second round. Aarón Rama had a decent performance while winter signings Portuguese Miguel Cardoso and Croatian striker Tonći Mujan had a direct impact at the team, though the latter only played six games due to a shoulder injury.

GOALKEEPERS
Many doubts. David Gómez was the starting choice in his first year at the team, but he committed several mistakes and ended to be a substitute. Devesa even recalled forgotten Felipe Ramos as the solution. Rodri only played one game and left during the winter window and Marc Martínez ended the season as the starting choice. It’s uncertain what can happen in this position for the coming season.

DEFENDERS
Repositioning. With Uxío and Serbian Stefan Deák busy with the first team, injured or simply out of form, the responsibility at the centre of the defense was assumed by young players like Róber Suárez and Quique Fornos. Róber should be considered as the more regular defender on the season though he was sent off three times. Fornos is also promising and was the only member of the squad that was picked by the U-17 team of Spain during this campaign. Both should be starters on next season.

What characterized the defensive positions is that Devesa opted in repositioning many players, at some point at the end of the season there were only three defenders in the list for the games, because midfielders Sidibé and Adrián Martínez were performing at defense. Captain Adrián deserves a special mention, rarely mentioned among the most talented players at the team, he was constant performing on the left side of the defense, even contributing with two goals and two assists.

Aarón Rama and Jorge Callón were the normal full-backs at the beginning of the Tercera tournament, but the injuries pulled them out of the team, and in the end Adrián and winger Cańi ended covering the spots. Fornos and Toni Insua, players coming from Juvenil A, also played some games at the sides.

MIDFIELDERS
Unexpected starters. With Sidibé and Adrián playing in other positions, it was expected that Portuguese Paulo Teles was going to claim a starting role, but he spent a lot of time on the bench of the first team, while later he was loaned out –without too much luck to CD Guijuelo (Segunda B)- so the spots were for two unexpected starters: Ángel Fernandez and Álvaro Queijeiro.

Queijeiro has been at the club since Alevines and was an all-time partner of lads like Uxio, Luis and Insua, but later he faced problems to succeed at Fabril, to the point that last season he was loaned out to Narón Balompé. Now he turned to be a fixed starter in the second round, always showing a solid performance. Meanwhile, Ángel, despite been 18, showed maturity and class. Also to mention the three games of Gabi Sanin, a prospect from Juvenil A that’s expected to be promoted on a permanent basis ahead of next season.

PLAYMAKERS
Hope. There were three playmakers at Fabril during this season. Bicho didn’t fulfill the expectations as it was mentioned before, big part of the problem was related to the transit between the first and the second team, but it was also noticed that he lowered his level at the end of the campaign. Romay had disciplinary problems as he was sent off three times, but managed to be the second player with more minutes (2,616) and more importantly he was the most important player in attack.

Remeseiro had a slow start, but grew up throughout the season after been replaced as a central attacker, at times he also performed on the wings and ended as the top scorer at the team (10). Despite the problems, a lot is expected from Bicho, Fernando Vázquez even gave the hint that the lad is going to have more opportunities with the first team. The role of the other two playmakers for the future is still to be defined, but it must be admitted that they fulfilled the expectations, so this is probably the most hoping position judging their season’s performance.

THE WINGERS
Youth. This was the position with the youngest players. 20-year-old Álvaro Lemos was going to be promoted to the first team, so 22-year-old Cańi was hired as his replacement. But the first suffered a serious knee injury and stayed at Fabril completing eight appearances at the end of the Tercera tournament. The latter had a strong start and even trained with the first team, though later he fell down. Still, he managed to end the season as one of the two main assistors at the team (7).

18-year-old Óscar García was promoted from Juvenil A and left a promising impression, during the winter window the club hired Portuguese Miguel Cardoso, a 19-year-old right winger that had a slow start, but that ended as an important reference in attack . Finally, Argentine Juanpa (19) only played four times in his first season with the team after been promoted from Juvenil A.

THE STRIKERS
Injuries. This was the position that suffered the biggest hit by the physical problems, and it’s that four of the six attackers at the team missed several games due to these reasons. Álex Pérez made a promising pre-season stage, but the return of Iago Beceiro changed the things as the latter turned to be a revulsive for the team scoring 5 goals in 9 matches, but problems with Devesa forced a second departure from Fabril.

Then Pérez ended to be the substitute of Dani Iglesias, but the true is that both failed to achieve the expected marks for a scorer in this league. Iglesias was the striker with more appearances with the team (32) –he was also the fourth player with more minutes (2,445)- but only scored 7 goals, while Pérez only scored once, though he was a substitute in 13 of his 17 league appearances, later he suffered a serious knee injury.

So, the club was forced to make signings in the winter market. Catalan Marc Nierga and Croatian Tonći Mujan arrived, the latter had a promising debut that coincided with the best moment of Fabril on the season. He scored five goals and provided two assists in only six games, though later he missed the end of the season due to a shoulder injury

Things were slower for Nierga, who only scored once and only made two appearances as a starter. Finally, the case of Chińo, who was promoted from Juvenil A and only made four Tercera appearances due to the injuries and later the lack of confidence from the coach, still he didn’t have a bad record as he scored twice in his four presentations with the team.
