The season is about to end and none of the five strikers at Deportivo were able to establish themselves as solid starters; all of them had their ups and downs and therefore the coach has been making rotations in the position.

Coach Fernando Vázquez was always referred as a coach that likes to perform with 4-4-2 formations, however his stage at Deportivo has been different as his most common starting formation was the 4-2-3-1, at times he switched the starting draw, but always having only one central attacker. On this season he only used the 4-4-2 for the first round game against Alavés.

And none of the five current strikers at the first team have been able to establish themselves as solid starters. The season began with Luis Fernández as the starting choice due to the shortness at the squad, but quickly Borja Bastón claimed the spot after scoring a brace in his debut against CE Sabadell CF (matchday 03).

The Madrilenian attacker had an impressive start as by matchday 10 he already had netted five goals, but later he spent many games without scoring and started to be criticized by the fans. At matchday 13, Vázquez made the first modification on the season and Luis Fernández ended claiming the spot.

One matchday before, for the home game against Real Madrid Castilla, the Galician young attacker scored his first league goal at the last minute of the encounter, then he stayed at the starting formation for five straight games and scored one more time (Vs. RCD Mallorca, matchday 14).

But for the last two games in 2013, Vázquez changed his mind again and Bastón returned into the starting formation.  Still, the coach wasn’t content and asked for reinforcements during the winter window. Curiously, both Bastón and Luis ended 2013 scoring a goal in the last game of the year, the only opportunity in which two different strikers scored in the same game (3-3 Vs. CD Numancia, matchday 19).

Toché was the first winter signing that joined the team for the striking zone, but he lacked form and Bastón continued to be the starting choice in the first games of 2014. He continued to be criticized despite scoring the winning goal in the visit to Cordoba CF (matchday 23).

One matchday later Toché debuted scoring the winning goal against CE Sabadell CF; it was the moment for the Murcian attacker, because in the next four games he netted three goals, scoring a brace before Hércules CF (matchday 28). He was now the starting striker at Deportivo.

It coincided with the first problems between Luis Fernandez and Fernando Vázquez; the ex-Fabril started to be ruled out for the games. The coach denied any problems, but on last week the Galician attacker was sent back to the gym during a training session, which clearly demonstrates the lack of satisfaction of the coach with the player. And it’s that, after been picked for the first 23 liga meetings, Luis was only picked for 6 of the last 16 games only playing for 181 minutes.

The tide changed one more time at Deportivo after Toché sustained an injury that sidelined him for three weeks. It was then the moment for the other attacker that arrived during the winter window: Diego Ifrán.  The Uruguayan debuted at Depor entered as a substitute on matchday 31, two games later he scored his first goal against Real Madrid Castilla and later against Recreativo.

Vázquez was impressed and allowed his debut as a starter, which occurred in the visit to RCD Mallorca (matchday 31). And within the last five liga meetings he has been the starter in attack. Meanwhile, the case of Javier Arizmendi is different. Signed in the summer in order to cover the problems on the wings, the Madrilenian has only played 77 minutes in 2014 distributed in three games (Girona FC, UD Las Palmas & RCD Mallorca).

The point is that none of the strikers have entirely convinced with their performance, at least in the long-term. It’s also true that the problems to create scoring opportunities are also affecting the five strikers at the team, after all they’re re ones responsible of ending the plays and not to start them. It still to be determined if Vázquez will make changes in attack for the last three games, ahead of the game against CD Numancia he has continued to test formations with two strikers playing at the same time.
