TACTICS: REPLACING JUAN DOMINGUEZ

24 May 2014
The suspension of midfielder Juan Dominguez is moving coach Fernando Vázquez to test with three alternatives: the 4-1-4-1, the 4-2-3-1, and the other is to play with a 4-4-2. There are also novelties at defense.

Important test for coach Fernando Vázquez as Deportivo tries to clinch the promotion back to Primera without having the player with more minutes on the season: Juan Dominguez (3,310). The Galician centre midfielder is suspended for this game; he has played as a starter in 37 of the 39 games disputed so far, only been replaced on matchday 24 against CE Sabadell CF.

During the week the coach has tested three alternatives in order to fill the gap. The first one was a 4-4-2 draw with Chilean Bryan Rabello joining Álex Bergantiños at midfield, while Uruguayan Diego Ifrán and Borja Bastón were the central attackers. The offensive of the draw was complemented with Luisinho and Ivorian Ibrahim Sissoko on the wings, while the defensive line was the same of the home meeting against CD Numancia.

That was the draw tested on Wednesday, and one day later Vázquez returned to the 4-2-3-1, this time with Juan Carlos as the playmaker in the scheme. Rabello and Álex Bergantiños performed at midfield, with Sissoko and Luisinho on the wings, while Ifrán was the lonely attacker.

There was also a modification during the training practice that changes the system: it’s to advance the position of Rabello joining Juan Carlos in the playmaking tasks transforming the draw into a 4-1-4-1. It is the same scheme used in games like the visit to RCD Mallorca, with the novelty of Álex Bergantiños performing as the lonely centre midfielder instead of Juan Dominguez.

On Thursday the coach also made two changes at defense, the first was the appearance of Manuel Pablo at the left side of the replacing Diego Seoane and the second was the presence of Carlos Marchena for Albert Lopo at the central positions.

The Catalan suffered a thigh injury on Thursday, but on Friday the scans revealed that the injury isn’t serious and therefore he could be available for the game, though before he must pass a late test on Saturday’s training. Lopo has been a starter in 11 of the 12 matches disputed since matchday 28 (3-2 Vs. Hércules CF), while Marchena has only played for 34 minutes within the seven games disputed by Depor since April.

On Friday the coach released the list of picked players for the game; knowing that the promotion is possible with a combination of results he decided to pick his full squad, including suspended Juan Dominguez.

Available players (20):
Goalkeepers: Lux & Fabricio
Defenders: Laure, Manuel Pablo, Luisinho, Seoane, Lopo, Marchena & Insua
Midfielders: Álex Bergantiños, Wilk, Juan Carlos, Núñez, Sissoko & Rabello
Attackers: Borja Bastón, Toché, Luis, Arizmendi & Ifrán
