MATCHDAY 41: ONE PROMOTION, ONE RELEGATION

03 Jun 2014
Deportivo confirmed its promotion to Primera, while Hércules CF are already at Segunda B. Mixed news for everybody else: the four clubs in playoff couldn’t win their games, while 5 of the last 6 places added the three points.

As it couldn’t be in a different way in this equal tournament, almost everything will be decided in the last matchday at Liga Adelante 2013/14. During the penultimate matchday only two things were decided: the promotion of Depor and the relegation of Hércules CF. The four playoff spots are undefined yet as their occupants missed the victory, while three of the four spots at the pit are still pending after the unusual victories for the bottom clubs.

Deportivo confirmed the promotion to Primera División after clinching a 1-0 win at home facing Real Jaén. The Galicians didn’t even need to add a point as their chasers failed. Leaders SD Eibar also got a 1-0 win hosting CD Lugo, which means that the title in the league will be decided in the last matchday.

The playoff positions are a chaos after the latest results. Barcelona B cannot compete in the race to Primera, but lived the most entertaining game on the weekend after securing a 4-3 win over AD Alcorcón despite the Madrilenians were leading 0-2 by minute 55, AD Alcorcón cannot longer aspire to Primera with this result. The curiosity of this game is that five goals were scored within the final 30 minutes, including the winner by David Babunski during the stoppage time.

Meanwhile, UD Las Palmas chained a third straight defeat, at the beginning of the week they changed the coach, but it was useless as they lost 2-0 visiting relegation-threatened RCD Mallorca. Sporting Gijón remain undefeated within their last four games, but their 1-1 draw visiting a Real Zaragoza was tasteless, because the Aragonians were playing for nothing. The Canarians and the Asturians arrived to the matchday with a mathematical chance to reach the direct promotion, and now go into the final week without securing yet a spot in the playoffs.

Real Murcia is the most in-form team among the teams fighting for the promotion; they have only lost 1 of the last 10 games and on Saturday they ended the dreams of CD Tenerife with a 0-1 win at the Heliodoro stadium. The curiosity is that the visiting goal was scored after just 20 seconds with a crossed shot by Kike García .It’s the sixth straight defeat for the Canarians, a team that’s now eliminated after been fourth only seven matchdays ago.

Córdoba CF and Recreativo de Huelva keep intact their promotion aspirations despite the 1-1 draw starred at El Colombino stadium, while CE Sabadell suffered their first loss in five weeks visiting Real Madrid Castilla (2-1). Still, the Catalans are alive in the quest for promotion. Six clubs reach the final matchday with the chance of clinching one of the four spots for the playoffs: Real Murcia, Sporting Gijón, UD Las Palmas, Cordoba CF, Recreativo de Huelva and CE Sabadell CF.

An unusual thing occurred in the fight for the permanence: 5 of the last 6 teams won their games. The only loser was Real Jaén; their 1-0 loss at the Riazor have pulled them down to the penultimate place, though they are not yet demoted. This rally of positive results caused the relegation of Hércules CF, their 0-1 win visiting Mirandés CF was only useful to put the local team in trouble.

The big winner was Real Madrid Castilla as the 2-1 win over CE Sabadell CF pulled them out of the pit, though the Madrilenians aren’t saved yet. Deportivo Alavés clinched a 3-1 victory hosting CD Numancia. The Basques have only lost one of the last four games and are only one point behind the safety. It’s the same situation than Girona FC, side that clinched a 1-2 win visiting SD Ponferradina thanks to a brace from Alfredo Ortuno.

With only one matchday left, eight clubs are only separated by three points: CD Lugo, SD Ponferradina, RCD Mallorca, CD Mirandés, Real Madrid Castilla, Girona FC, Deportivo Alavés and Real Jaén. They will define 3 of the 4 relegation spots in the final week.
