SEASON 2013/14: PLAYERS’ PERFORMANCE II

15 Jun 2014
It’s time to revisit the performance of Deportivo’s players during the league season that has ended. This second part presents the analysis of the eight midfielders/playmakers that performed for Deportivo during the campaign 2013/14

Mixed readings with the playmakers and the centre midfielders, there were some disappointments, but also promising lads and even the player of the season can be found on here. The following is the review of the eight players that performed on these spots during the season 2013/14

Álex Bergantiños –Fallen- (3,196 minutes on the season) The fourth player with more minutes on the season, one of the preferred choices by Fernando Vázquez for midfield territory, but it was one of the disappointments on the season.  The ex-captain of Fabril missed presence and strength to command midfield, mainly in the last part of the season, just when the team needed him the most and when he looked to be more out of form. Curiously his best moment was the first part of the campaign, just when the injuries forced the coach to replace him as a centre-back.

Juan Dominguez -Silent leader- (3,490) The player of the season for the peña members. He was the voiceless leader of the team, voiceless because he’s not the kind of leader that commands through words, but with his actions. The Galician was the player with more minutes, the one with the better passing ratio and the most fouled man. Perhaps he disappeared when Vázquez placed him as the playmaker in the schemes, but had a solid performance as a pivote, even as the lonely man for the position at the moment of using a 4-1-4-1. He netted four goals on the season, including the winning goal over AD Alcorcón (1-0, Matchday 08).

Cezary Wilk –Diminished- (1,238). Nobody expected anything from this unknown centre midfielder when he landed in A Coruña. The true is that he surprised with his first performances and some fans even liked him above Álex to join Juan Dominguez. Actually he gained a spot at the starting eleven until suffering a toe fracture in the game against CD Tenerife (Oct 26). The Polish spent two months on the sidelines and returned out of form. In 2014 he only appeared three times as a starter. Still, some analysts thought that Wilk should have played before Álex in the last part of the campaign.

Juan Culio –Dandy-  (1,569)The hero gets the money and the girl, it sound like a Hollywood script, but it was the short career of Culio at Depor. The Argentine was the first big signing on the season, landing as a left winger, but later used as a playmaker. He encouraged the fans with his first performances and big speeches, guided the team until reaching the direct promotion spots, by the end of 2013 he was considered the best player at Segunda and suddenly he wanted to leave following a big offer from the United Arab Emirates. He became a disappointment for the fans, but by the end of the season Culio was still talking as the morale leader of the team and even returned to the Riazor in order to celebrate the promotion over the grass. The reader might not like his attitude, but his impact at the team cannot be denied. After all, at the end of the season he still was the player with more crosses, one of the best assistors and one of the most fouled men. The true is that Vázquez never found the way to cover his departure.

Bryan Rabello –Attendant- (1,493) Another player that was supposed to be a left winger and that ended performing as a playmaker. He arrived during the winter window and was constantly criticized, because in big parts of the games he was simply annoying, always trying to do individual moves that were ending in nothing. However, his talent cannot be despised, just to point out that he was the best assistor at the team (5) despite only spending five months at the club. The Chilean is lethal in set-pieces and thus he was the only player capable of bringing two assists in one single liga game (2-2 at CD Lugo, matchday 37).

Juan Carlos Real -Misunderstood- (1.353). Solid campaign for the ex-Fabril playmaker; after a couple of seasons failing to get a spot at the first team, he finally got a chance and seized it. However his first matches were poor and the playmaker passed unnoticed. His big chance came for the home game against CD Alavés (Dec 07). He was a starter scoring a goal and had a solid performance, since that moment the best moment of Juan Carlos came, either playing as a playmaker or dragged into the right wing. He was the only player capable of scoring a goal and providing an assist in the same game (3-2 Vs. CD Hércules, matchday 28). But Fernando Vázquez pulled him off as a consequence of the 0-3 loss against SD Ponferradina (matchday 36) and only returned to play the last two games. It was unfair as the playmaker was living his best moment.

Bicho –The promise- (123) A lot was expected from this young playmaker after his flashes of quality in the Teresa Herrera game against Real Madrid, but the true is that he barely played, and when he had the chance to be a starter, it turned to be one of the worst games of the team (0-2 at CD Tenerife, matchday 11). It was the last appearance of Bicho with the first team. The worst part is that he was out of form as he was spending more time on the bench (he was picked seven times by Vázquez after the game Vs. Tenerife) than playing for Fabril, so in the end it was a lost year for Bicho, though he’s still considered as one of the big promises at the club

Teles –Accurate- (89) It wasn’t expected that this Portuguese centre midfielder was going to play with the first team during this season, but the injuries forced Vázquez to pick him up in 14 opportunities during the first round in liga, playing four times and even performing as a starter against UD Las Palmas (1-2, matchday 22). The 21-year-old midfielder demonstrated that he can be an accurate player with his passes, just to remember that he made two assists in the Copa endless meeting against Córdoba CF (Sept 11).  The pity is that after the arrival of the winter signings he was loaned to Segunda B club CD Guijuelo, place where he was wasted after only playing in eight matches.
