SEASON 2013/14: PLAYERS’ PERFORMANCE IV

16 Jun 2014
It’s time to revisit the performance of Deportivo’s players during the league season that has ended. This fourth part presents the analysis of the six centre forwards that performed for Deportivo during the campaign 2013/14

The missing link. Fernando Vázquez feared the worst after Deportivo failed to sign Álex Geijo; he started the season with two young forwards and a veteran that was returning to the place where he became international (Arizmendi), and El Profesor ended the season with five attackers at the team after completing three winter signings. This is the summary of the six attackers that performed with the first team during the season:

Borja Bastón –Pichichi- (1.939 minutes in liga) At the start of the season there were many doubts in the attacking line after the failed attempt to sign Geijo, especially since the first choices where young players like Luis and Borja. The true is that this 21-year-old attacked impressed during his first appearances, netting a brace in his debut against CE Sabadell CF (0-3, matchday 03) and later again against Hércules CF (0-2, matchday 07). However, later the Madrilenian lost the pace and passed unnoticed, he lost the starting spot with the arrival of the winter reinforcements, though ended the season as the Pichichi netting ten goals. Not a favorite of the fans, but scored important goals in the final stretch of the season, including a late equalizer visiting Deportivo Alavés (1-1, matchday 38).

Luis Fernández –Repressed- (1,090) First season for the 20-year-old attacker in professional football and the true is that it was a bittersweet experience for him. After netting 27 goals in 32 matches with Fabril, he faced anxiety for not scoring with the first team. He scored in Copa against Córdoba CF (2-2), but spent eleven games scoreless in liga. He finally scored a late goal against Real Madrid Castilla (2-0, matchday 12) and became a starter for five straight games scoring one more goal against RCD Mallorca (3-1, matchday 14). It was the best moment on the season for him, but later lost the spot before Borja Bastón. Curiously Luis started to score again after becoming a substitute. And then he was strangely ruled out of the coach’s plans. By the end of February, Vázquez already had six attackers at the team, too much for the list of picked players, and his decision was to rule out Luis from the games. In this way the Burela-born attacker only made three more appearances as a starter within the last 19 games, all of them for injury problems of the other attackers at the team. He ended the season as the second best scorer in liga (5) despite been the player with more appearances coming out from the bench (19).

Javier Arizmendi –Unnoticed- (957) It was a surprising signing during the summer that lost presence as long as the club started to reinforce the attacking line during the winter window. He started the season as a starter, not as a centre forward, but as a right winger due to the shortage at the squad. The true is that his performance was acceptable within the first three games, even scoring a goal against CE Sabadell CF (0-3, matchday 03).  But later became unnoticed on the pitch, at the time he was also affected by a back problem (Sciatica) that pulled him out of several games. By the time he was already recovered the club had already reinforced the attacking line. So, he was no longer counting for the coach at this stage, to the point that he only made four appearances in 2014. His best moment was to play for 12 minutes in the closing matchday against Girona FC, creating three chances and scoring a goal, the last one of Depor on the season.

Dani Iglesias –Testimonial- (13) He was only 18 at the moment of making his debut with the first team during the liga match against Córdoba CF (0-1, matchday 02). He was part of the initial plans of Fernando Vázquez due the shortage of the squad and only made two more appearances performing in Copa Del Rey. Iglesias was the only player that missed a penalty in the long penalty shootout against Córdoba CF. Later he returned to Fabril and only scored 7 goals in 34 appearances at Tercera.

Toché –Pulled- (580) The Murcian attacker arrived during the winter window and had an immediate impact at the team scoring four goals in his first five appearances, all of them important as it brought points, from the winner against CE Sabadell CF (2-1, matchday 24) to the late equalizer against Sporting Gijón (1-1, matchday 26) and the brace before Hércules CF (3-2 matchday 28). But at the end of March he suffered a pulled muscle injury that sidelined him for a month; Toché wasn’t the same after his return and didn’t score more goals in his last five presentations.

Diego Ifrán –Revulsive- (590) The Uruguayan was the last signing of the season, he arrived in March as the replacement for injured Salomão and, despite only playing for three months at the club, turned to be a revulsive, to the point that he ended as the starting choice in attack for coach Fernando Vázquez. His first four appearances were as a substitute and scored a goal in the last two (at Castilla, matchday 33, and Vs. Recreativo, matchday 34), then he turned into the starting striker for the next seven meeting scoring two more goals. He gave the feeling of been a striker that suits into the schemes of Vázquez.
