THE MOST EXPERIENCED COACH AT PRIMERA

12 Jul 2014
Deportivo is exchanging experience with experience. If Fernando Vázquez was going to be the second most experienced coach in the league, now Víctor Fernández is the one with more matches at Primera División.

After Fernando Vázquez was sacked from Deportivo, president Tino Fernández explained to the media that the club was going to replace him with someone having enough experience at Primera División and if it was possible with titles in his resume.

In the end he went for the coach with the larger experience in the league, at least between the ones that still active: Víctor Fernández. And it’s that the Aragonian man has spent sixteen seasons at the elite, twelve of them completing all the games on the bench.

In this was Víctor has completed 514 matches as a Primera coach (516 considering that he coached Real Zaragoza is two relegation playoff matches). It’s the highest mark among the active coaches in la liga, above Joaquín Caparrós (472) and Unai Emery (247). Caparrós was going to be the first man on this list followed by Fernando Vázquez (357) until the latter was fired.

Taking in mind the coaches out of action, Víctor Fernández is the fourth man with more games in la liga, only behind Luis Aragonés (757), Javier Irureta (613) and Miguel Muñoz (608). That experience can also be applied to Copa Del Rey, competition that the new boss at Depor won on the season 1993/94 with Real Zaragoza. He also lost a final with RC Celta (2000/01).
