REVIEW: EIBAR 0 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

16 Sep 2014
First win on the Primera season and first clean sheet; Eibar never knew how to handle the disadvantage. Depor only needed a shot on target and later were holding the result at the back before a harmless rival.

BEFORE THE GAME
As Víctor Fernández announced, there were many novelties in the lineup: more precisely six changes compared to the team that drew 2-2 with Rayo Vallecano. Three of the four signings made on deadline day, Sidnei Rechel, Juanfran Moreno and Hélder Postiga, were starters in the game. The draw was a 4-2-3-1.

Lux was the goalkeeper, Laure covered the right side of the defense, Luisinho played on the left with Sidnei joining Lopo at the centre. Medunjanin and Álex Bergantiños performed at midfield, Juanfran attacked from the right flank, Cavaleiro did it from the left, Juan Dominguez was the playmaker and Postiga was the centre forward.

At SD Eibar, coach Gaizka Garitano presented the same 4-2-3-1 formation of the previous two matchdays. Ángel was the centre forward with Mikel Arruabarrena playing behind him, the latter scored both goals in the 2-1 result of last season.

FIRST HALF
Very physical game; once again Depor found an early goal, which caused the desperation among Eibar’s players. The locals never completed a shot on target on this half despite having the ball possession and despite attempting several crosses into the area. Depor’s defense looked solid, with Sidnei having a positive debut.

The first attempt for Depor in the game came at minute 4, Juanfran got the ball at the edge of the area and his shot was deflected to corner-kick. Depor were pushing within the first minutes and earned four corner-kicks in just six minutes. The first chance for Eibar came at minute 10, Ángel found the ball at the edge of the area and tried to face Lux one-on-one, but Sidnei blocked the shot. The Brazilian was among the best players in the game.

Depor were well placed on the pitch and their pressure up front was forcing the Basques to play on long throws, and then the Galicians scored the lonely goal in the match. Juanfran got the ball at the right wing and released a precise cross searching for Postiga, who fell into the ground trying to connect the ball and before the pressure of a rival, the ball bounced in the Portuguese attacker and luckily it went into the path of Juan Dominguez and the shot of the midfielder hit the hands of locals goalie Irureta to end at the roof of the net.

In this way Deportivo continued with the tradition of scoring “early” goals, because it was the third straight opportunity in which Los Blanquiazules were netting a goal before minute 20. This time they weren’t going to lose the advantage like in happened in the previous two meetings.

The game turned to be equal after the goal, Eibar were in a hurry and were basing their game in long throws and the aerial game, while Depor were feeling comfortable having long ball possessions.  At minute 22, a cross from the left released by Javi Lara was barely deflected by Lopo, Dani García found the ball at the edge of the area, but his shot went over the crossbar. That was one of the few opportunities in which the Basques ended their attacking plays.

Later the Eibar based their game on the left wing and in the long runs of Javi Lara, Laure suffered a lot as he failed to control the attacks by the skillful winger, but the Basques never completed a shot on target in the first part; their crosses and drilled passes were always cleared by the defense and in the worse of the cases they didn’t find a receiver.

The fact the game of Eibar was based in aerial plays was a negative issue for the locals, because their 29 crosses never found a receiver and only won the 44% of the aerial duels. This time Mikel Arruabarrena wasn’t a factor for his team and Javi Lara was too alone. Sidnei had a great performance, being the base of the defense and always arriving on time to clear the ball.

SECOND HALF
After a promising start in the second part, Eibar fell down and never found the way to beat Depor’s defense. The Galician outfit, meanwhile, was content with the result and didn’t suffer holding on at the back trying to release a counterattack.

Gaizka Garitano made a change at half-time; Dani Nieto replaced Capa and immediately the Majorcan winger had an impact in the game as he had two consecutive attempts. In the first he made a long run from midfield to end releasing a high shot that Lux sent to corner-kick (47’), one minute later he collected the ball at the left side of the area, but this time he missed the target. In just three minutes he created more danger than the whole Eibar’s squad in the entire first part.

The pressure upfront of Depor was gone, so Eibar weren’t having problems stepping into the half of the Galicians, with Nieto on, now the locals were basing their game on the wings as Javi Lara was attacking from the left and Nieto did it from the right. However the locals continued to base their attacks in harmless crosses that didn’t give problems to Depor.

Víctor Fernández responded with the entry of Isaac Cuenca for an erratic Cavaleiro. The ex-Barca man brought more stability in attack and helped to release a couple of counterattacks, though Depor never created any danger in the second part, only a solo-play of Juanfran in which his cross from the right didn’t find a receiver (77’)

Little by little the game turned to be boring; Eibar lost the electricity of the first minutes and returned to be the clueless team of the first part, while Depor seemed content holding on at the back and patiently waiting to define the game in a counterattack.

Eibar didn’t have a clear chance until minute 66, and it was the first combination between Dani Nieto and Javi Lara, the first made the solo-play and the latter tried to chip the ball over Lux firing from the right side of the area, but he missed the target.

The next modification of Depor was the entry of José Rodriguez for Juan Dominguez, it was attempt to have more control at midfield. Dominguez scored the goal, but didn’t do too much in the second part. The second shot on target of Eibar came until minute 80, it was a drilling attempt of substitute Saul Berjón that was blocked by Lux.

The final substitution in the game was the entry of Canella replacing Juanfran, the Asturian performed on the right wing. Juanfran had a positive debut, with a couple of interesting moves on the right wing, including the cross that ended with the goal.

Nothing special occurred within the last ten minutes, just a shot of Saúl Berjón after an assist of Dani Nieto that missed the target (89’). The local attacker spent more time fighting against Depor’s defense than trying to find the equalizer. In the final three minutes a desperate Albentosa sought for a fight against Sidnei, but the Brazilian and Lopo controlled the situation. The duo of centre-backs were a mountain before Eibar’s attempts.

AFTER THE GAME
First victory on the season and first clean sheet. Not a pretty game, but Depor seized their only shot on target and later was solid at defense that turned to be a deadlock before an Eibar’s team that never knew how to play the game. Their aerial attempts never created any danger, just the entry of Dani Nieto and the moves of Javi Lara gave some problems. Great game of the whole defense, especially Sidnei, Lopo and Laure

The victory is pushing Deportivo into the 9th place on the standings; next week will be complicated with two games to be played in a frame of four days, including the Galician derby. Now Depor will host Real Madrid on Saturday (Riazor, 16h00 CET).
