SUMMARY: THE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS

19 Nov 2014
Mixed news for the two international players of Deportivo; Postiga didn’t have a good performance, but saw how his Portugal moved forward. Medunjanin suffered a big loss and witnessed the exit of Bosnia & Herzegovina’s coach.

Only two Deportivo’s players had action during the international break and they had very different results with their countries during the Euro 2016 qualifying round. Hélder Postiga returned to play for Portugal for the first time after the World Cup and the true is that he didn’t have a good performance in the first game, though the result was favourable.

He was the centre forward in the match against Armenia held in Faro (Estádio Algarve - Faro-Loule). The veteran striker had a very discrete presence and only played for 56 minutes after missing two scoring opportunities.

The first was a header that missed the target (23’) and the second a shot that was deflected (31’). He was replaced by Éder and the Portuguese outfit ended clinching a narrow win thanks to a goal by Cristiano Ronaldo (1-0). The true is that Portugal had enough chances to clinch a bigger win after Danny and Éder hit the woodwork.

Still, it’s a great result for Portugal as now they reach the second spot at group I having six points, only one less point than leaders Denmark. Their next game is until March 29, 2015 as the Portuguese team will host Serbia.

On Tuesday, Portugal played a friendly game against Argentina disputed at Old Trafford and Postiga was a substitute. Danny played as the centre forward in that game.  Depor’s striker didn’t play any minute in that game, which ended in a boring 1-0 win for the European side.

The other Depor’s player in international action was Haris Medunjanin. Since Edin Džeko was out of the game (calf injury), coach Safet Sušić switched the draw into a 4-1-4-1 with the midfielder performing as one of the two playmakers in attack.

The first half was really equal and the only thing that made the difference was the punch. The Bosnians missed very clear chances, while Israel seized two of their four shots on target. Depor’s midfielder was pretty active in offense and had two shots plus one key assist. At minute 32 he released a high and precise cross from the right wing that Kvržić incredible sent off from inside the box.

Then, within minutes 33 and 35, Haris completed his two shots. In the first he collected a low cross and his strong shot from inside the area was miraculously saved by local goalie Marciano. Two minutes later he missed the target from the edge of the area.

In the second part things were uphill for Bosnia and Herzegovina, because they were losing by two goals and suffered the early expulsion of Šunjić and the injury of Pjanić. With Džeko out the visiting team didn’t do too much to get a positive result, actually Israel was always closer to increase the advantage and they did it through Zahavi. The 3-0 loss was considered as a big humiliation.

So much that coach Safet Sušić was fired after been highly criticized by the media. He made changes at half-time leaving the team with only one natural defender and also for removing the only defensive midfielder on the pitch (Bešić). Bosnia and Herzegovina are now penultimate at group B after only adding two points in four games. Their next game is until March 28, 2015 as they host Andorra.
