PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO – MALAGA (LIGA)

06 Dec 2014
Two teams living different situations collide again at the Riazor, but both outfits are having the same problem: lack of goals. Juanfran Moreno could be available for the meeting, but Fariña won’t be ready.

STATISTICS: POOR RECORD AT HOME
Deportivo have only added five points after six liga meetings at the Riazor, it’s the third worst record at Liga BBVA, only above Córdoba CF (4) and UD Almeria (3). Málaga CF, meanwhile, have a decent record on the road, condition in which they already won twice: 1-2 at Córdoba CF (matchday 07) and 0-1 at Real Sociedad (matchday 09).

The Andalusian outfit, like the Galicians, has had problems to score the goals, they only netter 16 goals so far, it’s the worst mark among the first eight places and it’s only four more goals than Depor. The difference has been the defense, because Malaga CF have only allowed 14 goals, which is the sixth best mark in the league, while Deportivo represent the four worst defense with 23 goals allowed, mark only above Levante UD (28), Rayo Vallecano (24) and Elche CF (23).

A final stat is related to the impressive series of Deportivo hosting Malaga CF. After eleven meetings at the Riazor the Andalusians only clinched a draw: 2-2 on the season 2001/02. The mark of goals in also impressive in those meetings: twenty-two goals for Depor and only four for Malaga CF.

DEPORTIVO: NO GOALS IN NOVEMBER
For the third time in its centennial history Deportivo were unable to score a goal during a month of November. It only happened before in 1932 and 1935, having in mind that in 1932 the team only played one game during that month as the league was starting on the last weekend of November. It’s a stat that represents the current negative face of Depor, a team dragging a mark of 281 minutes without scoring a goal in the league competition.

In the other side of the story the Galician outfit only allowed two goals in November, it’s the second best mark at Primera only below Real Sociedad (1). Only in four opportunities during this century Depor were able to tie that mark during a month of November (2002, 2003, 2009 & 2010).

Coach Víctor Fernández faces the opposite situation to the start of season, time when his team was normally scoring but at the same time was allowing too much goals. The ‘solution’ will continue to be relying in a defensive line composed by five men.

After resting almost the full squad in midweek facing the same rival, now the coach is ready to return into the 5-3-2 draw. There are two doubts, the first is who will play at the right-back position. Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ should remain at the starting eleven after playing in Copa Del Rey, but Juanfran is set to return after suffering a muscle injury on last week. He completed the training session on Saturday though he hasn’t received the medical okay to play.

Fabricio is the starting goalie, Luisinho returns to the left side of the defense. The second big doubt is if Víctor will keep Modibo Diakité after his big game in Copa or if Albert Lopo will regain the spot after fulfilling his suspension. The other two centre-backs will continue to be Pablo Insua and Sidnei Rechel.

Wilk and Medunjanin were rested in midweek and are ready to return joining José Rodríguez at midfield. Finally Iván Cavaleiro and Hélder Postiga are the attackers in the formation.

There will be a last training session on Saturday. The coach will release the roster for the game after the session. Lucas Pérez is the only player staying at the injury room, while the coach has to decide if playmaker Luis Fariña and the same Juanfran are going to be picked for the meeting. On Friday he said that it will be difficult to see Fariña in the roster, while he also ruled out Salomão, who is training with the group, but doesn’t feel prepared.

José Rodríguez said before the game that he talked to Víctor Fernández and that after the conversation he returned to the starting formations, ”Basically he requested me to grow up. I am glad to have talked to him, because I don’t have the experience of Manuel Pablo. I am only 19 and need to have the coach all over me. I was losing my position on the pitch and was risking too much with my passes. In this league to miss a pass means to kill yourself.”

List of picked players: It will be released until Saturday.

MALAGA: PROBLEMS UPFRONT
Malaga CF might be facing a complete different situation to Deportivo as they currently lie in a European spot, but the Andalusians are facing the same problem than the Galicians: lack of goals. They scored six goals in November, which is the seventh best mark in the league, but it isn’t enough to keep fighting in Europe and there are big problems with the injuries in attack.

And it’s that Nordin Amrabat and Juanmi are out injured, this duo combined has scored six of the sixteen goals on the season (38%), so the hopes upfront are only relying in Roque Santa Cruz, who has netted three goals so far. The Paraguayan wasn’t even picked for the Copa match in order to avoid a bigger tragedy is case of suffering an injury.

It’s expected that coach Javi Gracia will return to the base that lost last weekend against Atlético Madrid. It neither means a total facelift as the casualties forced the coach to use seven normal starters during the meeting in Copa Del Rey.

Cameroonian Carlos Kameni returns to the goal; he’s currently sixth in the list of Zamoras at Primera División. Argentine Marcos Angeleri joins Brazilian Weligton Robson at the centre of the defense. The full-backs will be the same ones of the Copa match: Venezuelan Roberto Rosales at the right and Ivorian Arthur Boka at the left.

Ignacio Camacho, who scored at the Riazor in midweek, stays at midfield. He missed the previous game with Atlético Madrid for a suspension and is joined by Sergi Darder, one of the seven players at the squad coming out from the B squad.

The wingers for the game are young players, 22-year-old Luis Alberto attacks from the right wing, he played last season at Barca B, while Samu Castillejo does it from the left, the latter has been international with the U-21 squad in Spain.

Captain Sergio Barbosa ‘Duda’ adds experience to the team; he has only played twice as a starter and is replacing Juanmi. Finally, Santa Cruz is the central attacker; the Paraguayan is lethal in the aerial game (one of his three goals on the season came through a header). Also to have in mind that he scored within the last two games (Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid).

List of picked players: (18) Kameni, Ochoa (goalkeepers); Rosales, Weligton, Antunes, Angeleri, Boka, Miguel Torres (defenders); Camacho, Horta, Recio, Duda, Luis Alberto, Darder (midfielders); Santa Cruz,  Juanpi & Samu Castillejo (attackers)
