TACTICS: PENDING OF FARIÑA

14 Dec 2014
Víctor Fernández is ready to switch back into the 4-2-3-1 or the 4-3-3 figure. It will depend on the presence of Luis Fariña on the starting formation. The option of keeping the line of five defender is still on.

It could be the last game of Víctor Fernández at Deportivo, but the coach is hiding his cards for the “final” against Elche CF. Only one training session is pending and he hasn’t tested any new formation for the game. As the veteran coach always says, it means that the draw for the game will be one of the schemes already used: the 4-2-3-1, the 4-3-3, the 4-4-2 or the latest 5-3-2.

It seems logical to switch the 5-3-2 into a more offensive scheme, after all Deportivo need the three points before a direct rival and playing at home, but it ultimately depend on the situation of Luis Fariña, one of the favorite players of the coach.

The Argentine playmaker, together with Haris Medunjanin, Sidnei Rechel and Hélder Postiga, always play when they are available and the doubt is if he will be fit enough to perform as a starter after been sidelined for three weeks.

Actually, Víctor switched the draw to the 5-3-2 since the day that Fariña got injured, he argued that there weren’t enough offensive players, though Lucas Pérez was the only man on the sidelines. What really happened is that the coach never liked the idea of playing with two centre forwards and was also doubting with the poor form of Isaac Cuenca.

If Víctor thinks that Fariña is fit enough to be a starter then one of the three centre-backs will be benched and it will be a matter of seeing how the players are located on the pitch in what could be a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 figure. If not the system with five defenders will stay.

Other players like Fabricio Agosto, Cezary Wilk and José Rodríguez are set to start after having a regular performance in recent meetings. The option of the 4-4-2, with Toché playing at the same time than Postiga, seems less probable, at least in the starting formation.
