TARGETS FOR THE WINTER MARKET

26 Dec 2014
Deportivo are targeting the signing of at least one attacker for the winter window. The club is also interested in signing midfielders. Costa Rican Celso Borges seems to be the first man that will join Depor.

The winter window will be opened on next week and Deportivo are highly interested in singing two or three players. Last week coach Víctor Fernández was asked about the targets for the transfer market taking in mind that centre-back Modibo Diakité was leaving.

He responded that, ”If we find another centre-back then it’s fantastic, but it isn’t the priority for the winter window. The priority for the winter window is in attack. There have been a lot of injuries and it’s where we’ll focus our efforts. If we can get a new centre-back then it is fine, but we should focus the little money that we have in other positions.”

In this way Depor are focusing the efforts in signing a striker and an offensive midfielder. The man that seems closer to arrive is centre midfielder Celso Borges (26, AIK Fotboll). Swedish paper Expressen informed on this week that the player, who is ending contract in July, wants to leave and that Deportivo and French Évian Thonon Gaillard FC are interested in him.

The media in Sweden is convinced that the operation –a transfer- will be closed in the coming days, though other sources in Spain believe that the only way to sign the player is until he ends his contract due to the low margin with the salary cap rule.

Borges is the kind of midfielder that Depor’s coach wanted to sign during the summer, a “box-to-box” midfielder that has been hardly missed on the first part of the season. The Costa Rican player took part of the FIFA World Cup and is playing in Sweden since 2012, scoring 22 goals in 79 matches at the Allsvenskan (Swedish first division).

On this week newspaper La Voz de Galicia informed about the three targets for the striking zone. The three of them aren’t playing at their teams and the source understands that the first choice is Oriol Riera (28, Wigan Athletic). He scored 13 goals in 37 Primera matches with CA Osasuna during the season 2013/14, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the relegation of the Navarran club.

So, the striker was transferred last summer to Wigan Athletic for a fee of €2.55 million. However he has only played 12 games in the Championship only scoring one goal. Depor got interested in the player before, but he preferred to move to England. Now he can arrive as part of a loan move.

The other two strikers pointed by La Voz de Galicia are Mauro Zárate (27, West Ham United) and Javi Guerra (32, Cardiff City). The newspaper claims that both operations are difficult, and that the first option is Riera.

There’s another player linked with Deportivo: centre midfielder Vicente Iborra (26, Sevilla CF). Last weekend newspaper ABC presented a strange report on a possible swap between Depor and Sevilla including the exit of Juan Dominguez.

It was strange as the paper reported a conversation with advisor Fernando Vidal in which he was openly admitting the possibility to make a swap, ” If Sevilla aren’t counting with Iborra, then I would change him right now for Juan Domínguez. It would be good as it is a position in which we are in need. I say it with all the respect for a good and homegrown player like Juan Domínguez.” were the words reported by the newspaper during the conversation with Vidal. However one day later he appeared on the issue of Deporte Campeón and denied that he had said that.
