DEPORTIVO IN JANUARY

30 Dec 2014
Four matches for Depor in the first month of 2015, which will witness the closure of the first round in La Liga. There are two meetings against direct rivals for the permanence, while there’s also room to face FC Barcelona.

The elimination in Copa Del Rey is reducing the physical charge for Deportivo, January is always a busy month as the last-16 round and the quarterfinals in Copa are fully disputed in midweek dates. The interesting thing is that the four rivals in the month are qualified for the next round, so while they are doubling their efforts the Galicians will only be focused in the league competition.

Also to notice that three of the four games in the month are taking place at the Riazor. Los Blanquiazules only won six home meetings in 2014 and now have the opportunity to win half of that mark in one single month.

There’s a game against one of the two giants in the middle of two meetings against direct rivals, but before Depor start the year facing Athletic Bilbao, team that was early eliminated in the UEFA Champions League and that’s still searching for their best form after only winning five games in liga. The Basques are currently in mid-table, eleven points behind the European seats.

The last five official games of Athletic:

Matchday 14 ATHLETIC 0 CORDOBA 1
UEFA CL ATHLETIC 2 BATE 0
Matchday 15 REAL SOCIEDAD 1 ATHLETIC 1
Copa del Rey ATHLETIC 1 ALCOYANO 0
Matchday 16 ATHLETIC 1 ATLETICO 4

A first “final” in the month arrives with the visit to Levante UD, which is the lonely away match in January. The Valencian team had a poor start to the season, which moved to replace coach José Luis Mendilibar with Lucas Alcaraz. Now Los Granate have only lost one of the last seven matches in liga, but remain close to the pit (only two points above relegation).

The last five official games of Levante:

Copa del Rey ALBACETE 1 LEVANTE 1
Matchday 14 LEVANTE 1 GETAFE 1
Matchday 15 CORDOBA 0 LEVANTE 0
Copa del Rey LEVANTE 0 ALBACETE 0
Matchday 16 LEVANTE 1 REAL SOCIEDAD 1

Deportivo will live the toughest exam in the month in the day that the first round is closed. It’s the visit of FC Barcelona to the Riazor. The Catalans are feeling a little frustrated with some results and as currently they are below Real Madrid, but they have only lost three games in all the competitions and their last defeat took place early in November (0-1 Vs. RC Celta).

The last five official games of Barca:

Matchday 14 BARCELONA 5 ESPANYOL 1
UEFA CL BARCELONA 3 PSG 1
Matchday 15 GETAFE 0 BARCELONA 0
Copa del Rey BARCELONA 8 HUESCA 1
Matchday 16 BARCELONA 5 CORDOBA 0

January ends for Deportivo with another direct meeting: the visit of Granada CF to the Riazor. There were high expectations with the arrival of Joaquin Caparrós, however the team is living their worst moment on the season after spending twelve matchdays without winning a game in liga. Their last win took place at the end of September (0-1 at Athletic Club). The lacks of victories put them inside the relegation zone for the first time during the season. The game could be disputed two days of what was originally scheduled if Granada fail to reach the quarterfinal in Copa.

The last five official games of Granada:

Copa del Rey GRANADA 1 CORDOBA 0
Matchday 14 GRANADA 1 VALENCIA 1
