THINKING OF FC BARCELONA

16 Jan 2015
Víctor Fernández will have three important casualties for the last game in the first round, while there have been arrivals and exits at his team. The Catalans are playing the Cup, but will arrive to the game with their best starting eleven.

Deportivo will end the first round in la liga with the visit of FC Barcelona to the Riazor (Sunday, 19h00 CET). Two things have focused the attention during the week: the movements during the winter window and also the state of the injured players.

On Wednesday the club confirmed the signing of centre midfielder Celso Borges, while it also announced the exit of right-back Diego Seoane, who was sent on loan to Segunda club CD Lugo. In this way the club already completed four operations during the winter window after the arrival of forward Oriol Riera and the exit of centre-back Modibo Diakité.

The team is still composed by 25 players pending on more exits and arrivals. But coach Víctor Fernández only has 22 men are available for Sunday’s game. Three players are out due to injury reasons: winger Lucas Pérez, playmaker Luis Fariña and striker Hélder Postiga.

Lucas has been training all week long working alongside the group, with the only difference of the protection on his left knee. The player wrote on his Twitter account that he feels fine, so for now the option of the surgery in order to fix his knee problems is looking improbable. A final decision should be made on Saturday, but now the doctors are more optimistic. In case of not having more issues the player should be available for the first game in February facing Rayo Vallecano.

Argentine Fariña continues with his recovery process from his stress fracture injury. He has been training apart and should be off for another two weeks, though there’s a small option of having the playmaker available for next week’s home game against Granada CF.

In the case of Postiga, the Portuguese attacker underwent surgery on Wednesday in order to fix his lumbago problem. The doctors announced that the player will remain sidelined for two weeks and should be available for the match against Rayo Vallecano.

There’s a special case with left winger Diogo Salomão. After the league game against Athletic Club he showed up to Abegondo with a swollen knee, problem that was fixed in a couple of days. But the player, who is returning from a long absence, was worried and that’s the reason why the coach didn’t pick him for the past clash with Levante UD. The doctors believe that this is more a mental situation rather than a physical problem. Víctor still has to decide if he will be picked for Sunday, though the Portuguese has the medical okay to play.

About the rest of the team, everybody is fit to play. Luisinho skipped the first two training sessions during the week, but he joined the group on Wednesday and is available. Laure had the flu on Wednesday, but is also fine.

New signing Celso Borges joined the group on Thursday, though the team was unable to train at Abegondo due to the heavy rain. The major part of the players stayed at the gym and there was also a video session to study the rival. Only four men went out to the waterlogged pitch: Borges, Juanfran, Fariña, Lux and Juan Domínguez. The quartet made several physical exercises.

At the beginning of the week there was a training match between the substitutes in the game against Levante and Deportivo B. Later, during the week, two players from Fabril were training with the first team, the first was keeper David Gómez and the other was centre-back Róber Suárez.

The 3-1 victory over Atlético Madrid brought a peaceful week for FC Barcelona after the polemic situations lived in past days. The Catalan club was punished by FIFA and is unable to make signings; there was also tension after the exit of the director of football and the announcement of the elections at the end of the season.

Before visiting the Riazor, the Catalans had to play against Elche CF, this for Copa Del Rey, though the tie was practically decided after the 5-0 score of the first-leg. For this reason Coach Luis Enrique was presenting an alternative lineup for the game and is reserving the major part of the starting team for the match against Depor.

The only confirmed casualty for the game against Depor is centre-back Thomas Vermaelen. The ex-Arsenal man is out for the rest of the season with a thigh injury. Other two players are facing physical problems. Midfielder Xavi Hernández is dragging a Soleus problem, while playmaker/winger Neymar suffered an ankle injury after a nasty foul suffered in the game against Atlético. Both men haven’t trained during the week, though it’s expected that they will be available for the weekend.
