MATCHDAY 24: THE VISITORS PREVAIL

24 Feb 2015
Four of the ten games in the matchday ended in victories for the visiting sides. There were important results at the top that might define some things, while Depor ended two points above relegation.

If the previous matchday was dominated by the local teams, now the situation was the opposite as the visiting sides conquered four victories, which has been an interesting tendency on this season. There were two unexpected results that might be really important in the definition of the first six places.

First to all, FC Barcelona were surprised for the second time on this season playing at the Camp Nou losing before Malaga CF (0-1). It’s also the second defeat for the Catalans in 2015 and might be important in the definition of the title. And it’s that the two big clubs from Madrid seized the situation and won their matches.

Real Madrid played a solid game and conquered a 0-2 win visiting Elche CF, now they are four points above FC Barcelona, a difference that could be crucial ahead of the derby in March. At the same time Atlético Madrid regained part of the lost ground with an easy 3-0 victory hosting UD Almeria.

The other important result involves the defeat of Sevilla CF visiting Real Sociedad (4-3). It was the craziest game in the month with three comebacks in the score; actually the Basques were losing 2-3 by minute 80. Valencia CF got a suffered 1-2 win visiting a combative Córdoba CF, now the difference between the fourth and the fifth position is five points, the largest difference on this season that might start to define the participants in the next Champions League season.

Villarreal remain sixth after their 1-0 success hosting SD Eibar, it’s the fifth straight defeat for the Basques. RC Celta are finally returning to their previous solid form after getting the three points in the Galician derby before Deportivo (0-2). Now they are eighth, though they are far from Europe (13-point gap). They got the eight spot after RCD Espanyol were surprised in the visit to Getafe CF (2-1).

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Real Madrid 60 74 22
2 Barcelona 56 67 14
3 Atlético 53 50 22
4 Valencia 50 43 21
5 Sevilla 45 42 30
6 Villarreal 44 38 22
7 Malaga 38 26 27
8 Celta 31 25 24

In the relegation battle the important result was the home win of Levante UD against Granada CF (2-1). It was a boring game with a lot of excitement in the end, with three expulsions and two last-minute goals to see Levante UD getting the three points.

The result is only leaving a five-point difference between the 10th and the 17th place, so things are getting pretty tight. Depor are now only two points above the pit. Finally, Rayo Vallecano lost in their visit to Athletic Club and remain in trouble (1-0).

The situation at the bottom of the standings:

place team points GF GA
16 Almeria 23 22 39
17 Elche 23 21 44
18 Levante 22 19 44
19 Granada 19 15 37
20 Córdoba 18 18 38

MATCHDAY 25: BIG CHALLENGES FOR THE GIANTS IN MADRID

Both Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid face tough challenges in this matchday. Los Blancos  are hosting sixth place Villarreal CF, while Los Rojiblancos visit fifth place Sevilla CF. Meanwhile, FC Barcelona have a more accessible meeting visiting relegation-troubled Granada CF.

Deportivo face an important game visiting direct rival UD Almeria. The matchday is completed with other six games: RCD Espanyol Vs. Granada CF; Rayo Vallecano Vs. Levante UD; Málaga CF Vs. Getafe CF; Valencia CF Vs. Real Sociedad; SD Eibar Vs. Athletic Club & RC Celta Vs. Elche CF.
