MATCHDAY 25: DEFINING THE TOP POSIITONS

03 Mar 2015
For the first time on the season there are seven points separating the fourth and the fifth place. Nothing changed at the bottom of the standings as the last seven places were unable to win their matches.

The matchday left interesting results at the top positons; first to all Real Madrid could only get a 1-1 draw hosting Villarreal CF, result that allows FC Barcelona to restore the two-point difference with the leaders. The Catalans clinched a 1-3 victory visiting Granada CF. These results increase the importance of the upcoming derby to be played in March.

Atlético Madrid didn’t seize the setback of their neighbors as they only got a goalless draw visiting Sevilla CF. Neither was a good result for the Andalusians as Valencia CF clinched a 2-0 win entertaining Real Sociedad.

Now the difference between the fourth and the fifth place is seventh points, the highest difference on this season. It could be the decisive point on the campaign when the Champions League spots start to be defined. In this way Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Valencia CF are on their way to secure their participation in the next edition of the biggest tournament in Europe.

Since early in the first round the European places seemed destined for a fight between seven clubs, so the battle for the Europa League seats continues to be a matter of three: Sevilla CF, Villarreal CF and Malaga CF, the latter clinched a 3-2 win over Getafe and remain four points below the sixth place.

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Real Madrid 61 75 23
2 Barcelona 59 70 15
3 Atlético 54 50 22
4 Valencia 53 45 21
5 Sevilla 46 42 30
6 Villarreal 45 39 23
7 Malaga 41 29 29
8 Celta 32 26 25

Meanwhile, the bottom clubs are living a complicate moment as everyone seems stuck. Starting with Córdoba CF, the bottom club clinched a sixth straight defeat in the tournament after losing 1-0 at RCD Espanyol. Levante UD also failed during their visit to Rayo Vallecano (4-2). The news in this game is that Alberto Bueno netted the four goals and only needed fifteen minutes for it, the quickest mark since Bebeto did the same with Deportivo facing Albacete Balompié and only needing six minutes (Oct 10, 1995).

Granada CF was defeated by FC Barcelona. The last seven places were unable to win their games; actually the only ones that added points were UD Almeria, Deportivo and Elche CF, the first two drew 0-0 on Saturday, while Elche CF got a point thanks to a late penalty visiting RC Celta at Balaídos (1-1).

Another team in a free fall is SD Eibar. The Basques lost again at home against neighbors Athletic Club (0-1) and suffered their sixth defeat in a row. They have only picked one of the last twenty-one points in dispute and are now only five points above the pit.

The situation at the bottom of the standings:

place team points GF GA
16 Almeria 24 22 39
17 Elche 24 22 45
18 Levante 22 21 48
19 Granada 19 16 40
20 Córdoba 18 18 39

MATCHDAY 26: BATTLE FOR THE THIRD PLACE
The most attractive game in the matchday is the visit of Valencia CF to Atlético Madrid. Both teams are only separated by one point and battle for the third position. Leaders Real Madrid visit Athletic Club, while second place FC Barcelona entertain Rayo Vallecano.

Deportivo have a tough challenge hosting fifth place Sevilla CF. The matchday is completed with other six games: Levante UD Vs. SD Eibar; Elche CF Vs. UD Almeria; Granada CF Vs. Malaga CF; Real Sociedad Vs. RCD Espanyol; Villarreal CF Vs. RC Celta & Córdoba CF Vs. Getafe.
