Depor’s coach isn’t worried for the lack of goals as his team is creating goal opportunities during the games. He also announced changes compared to the team that was trashed in the first round match.

Unai Emery Etxegoien is currently one of the more respected Spanish football coaches; after four years misunderstood at Valencia CF, plus a failed period at FC Spartak Moscow, this Basque coach landed at Sevilla CF in January of 2013 and little by little earned the confidence of the fans.

The first six months were difficult as the team could only end ninth during the campaign 2012/13, but the following season was simply brilliant. The team had a slow start, but soon grew up and ended the tournament at the fifth spot, and more importantly it conquered the UEFA Europa League defeating SL Benfica in the final. For this reason he signed a two-year renewal. For the current season the goal is to repeat the title in this tournament and fight to enter into the Champions League, despite the most recent results it is commented that a new renewal will be offered to him.

Emery has a special link with Deportivo as his father, Juan Emery, was the goalkeeper of the Galician team between the years 1959 & 1962. An interesting stat is that Emery never lost a league match as a coach facing Deportivo, this after ten meetings against the Galicians (8 victories and 2 draws), however he lost in Copa Del Rey as his Valencia was defeated at Mestalla by Lotina’s Depor during the season 2009/10 (1-2).

This is the third official meeting between Emery and Víctor Fernández, the first took place during the Primera season 2007/08 and it was won by Depor’s current coach, at the time he was coaching Real Zaragoza and his team defeated Emery’s Almeria 1-0.The second was the 4-1 loss at the Sánchez Pizjuán earlier in this tournament.

Depor’s coach addressed the media on Friday’s noon. He talked to reporters for sixteen minutes. He explained why the roster for the game is composed by nineteen men, “It’s for precaution. The hour of the game is a little early and we will be concentrated at the hotel. It’s just a matter of been prepared. The nineteen players in the list are in perfect conditions for the game.”

The Aragonian man was saying that Luis Fariña is fit to play as a starter, “Evidently the form of Fariña isn’t the same of Álex Bergantiños, but he’s fit to play for the ninety minutes.” He also confirmed that Cavaleiro is fine, “He trained without problems and was just sidelined at the beginning of the week as a precaution. He joined the training on Wednesday and is fine, there’s no doubt on that.”

Depor’s coach is eager to win this game, “I want to win the game and we have to play in order to win despite we are facing a great rival. They have told me a lot of the statistics regarding the victories of Sevilla and their coach, but I’m careless. I believe in my team and we have to compete without truce.”

He didn’t want to talk of the possible lineup, but said that it will be a different team to the one that faced the same rival in the first round, “Surely we will see four or five new faces compared to the team that played in Seville. That’s for sure.”

About the rival, he said that, “It’s a team is the same group of Valencia, Atlético Madrid and Villarreal. They will fight for the third spot. They made a great game against Atlético though they were unable to score. They have depth on the wings and a predator like Bacca up front. Sevilla have the options to mix different styles. It’s a very physical team. I doubt they will change compared to the team that faced Atletico.”

Big part of the press conference was related to the lack of goal at Depor after missing to score within the last three games, the coach remains optimistic and emphasizes that at least his team is creating opportunities, “We work every week in order to do the right things, we only need more luck. I am not worried for the lack of goal. The important thing is to have options. Later we can end scoring in a dirty play.”

“Sincerely it isn’t normal. It isn’t normal to make fifty shots and end scoreless. The important thing is that we are a team that dominates and that creates scoring opportunities. We are creating chances and it is the important thing. The goal will arrive. Maybe tomorrow we will only complete a few shots and could end scoring a lot. Football is a paradox. For several reasons the goal isn’t coming, but I’m calm as we are creating chances. “ He added.

Víctor continued analysing the lack of goals at Deportivo, “The goal brings tranquillity and the points bring the confidence, but if you are creating chances, then it means that you are doing a lot of good things. Statistically we are lacking goal, and for the merits we are lacking points, but we are competing. The team is transmitting the feeling that wants to win. Barca is the only team rolling over us during this year, in the rest of games we had our chances to win. No one had to come here to the Riazor to complete twenty shots and pass over us” He added.

A journalist asked if Medunjanin was out injured as he wasn’t included in the roster for the game, and the Zaragoza-born man explained that, “There are only three players with physical problems; Salomão, Toché and Postiga. The rest are in perfect conditions.”

Finally, Víctor Fernández was talking of Isaac Cuenca, “I believe that he’s playing now with more confidence. The confidence comes if you enjoy of more minutes and also for what you do on the pitch. He already had confidence regarding the minutes, because I believe he’s the eighth player with more minutes at the team, so he has had confidence all year long. Now he has more confidence as things are starting to work for him on the pitch, now he is only pending to have a perfect game at home, here at the Riazor.”

Sevilla’s coach addressed the media on Friday’s noon. He didn’t want to talk of next week’s game with Villarreal for the Europa League and preferred to say that he remains focused in Depor, “I can only see Deportivo. La liga is the fact that allows us to enjoy of Europe, in the end it gives us the spot to have that chance. We fight in order to stay in Europe for many years.”

Nico Pareja and Iago Aspas were picked for the game, but the Basque coach left the impression that both men aren’t fit to play, “We want to see them entering into the pace of the squad, if later they end out of the game then at least they are part of the trip. They are important footballers and want them in the day by day.”

About the fact that Sevilla are now more worried for the rivals coming from behind than for reaching Atlético Madrid, he said that, “I want to look upwards and tomorrow we want to reach the mark of the 49 points. It will give us the strength to reach the farthest round possible.”

Finally, Emery was commented the fact that Sevilla want to renew his contract, “I’m very lucky to coach Sevilla. I feel respected by the Sevillismo and we always had a good relation. I always say that you are where you want to be and we will follow the same path. Sevilla will continue growing and the first goal of Unai Emery is Sevilla.”
