FIXED TEAM, SAME PROBLEM

18 Mar 2015
Víctor Fernández has found a regular team for his schemes, but Deportivo are returning to the same path at the beginning of the first round after allowing goals in eight of the nine games in la liga.

Deportivo are at the edge of relegation once again after the most recent results. After the heavy defeat visiting Sevilla (1-4, October 5) coach Víctor Fernández started to introduce changes in the defence led by the entry of goalkeeper Fabricio Agosto, the team improved in the defensive department after been a disaster in the first matches.

To the point that in the following eight games Deportivo clinched five clean sheets. In this frame of the season the coach also found a fixed line of four men for the back zone, with experienced players Albert Lopo and Sidnei Rechel covering the central positons and with Luisinho and Juanfran Moreno on the sides.

It can be interpreted as an offensive bet as the full-backs are pretty active in attack despite the constant criticism towards the effectiveness of their crosses. But Deportivo were achieving the results and the team started the year 2015 with two clean sheets in two games.  Little by little Víctor started to find normal starters for the other positions.

But things changed since the home clash before FC Barcelona (0-4), the result can be seen as “logical”, but the point is that in the following eight games Depor only achieved two clean sheets (2-0 Vs. SD Eibar and 0-0 at UD Almeria) and conceding 13 goals, the fourth worst mark in the league only bellow Rayo Vallecano, Córdoba CF and Levante UD.

So, as Víctor was finding a fixed starting team, he was meeting again with the same problem of been a weak defence that allows goals. It’s also fair to say that this problem has also to do with the changes at midfield. Since the end of January Celso Borges claimed a starting spot at the team alongside Álex Bergantiños, which improved the ball possession, but not the defensive aids.

With Celso on, the average in the ball possession raised from 46% to 51%,, reaching the peak in the visit to UD Almeria, match in which the percentage was favorable with a 64%, the highest on this season. Interestingly the improvement in the ball possession didn’t help to improve the numbers in defence as the team continued allowing goals.

One of the strongest theories to explain why Depor are allowing more goals despite having more time the ball can be found in the past game with Valencia. The Blanquiazul outfit had a ball possession of 50% in the game, but ended conceding two goals that were born in counterattacks in which the midfielders failed to bring aids to the defence.

It’s a problem of unbalance that’s bringing back the initial problem of the large number of goals allowed. Truly the coach has found a fixed team, but he still has to polish the details, one of the main ones is the system of aids to prevent counterattacks and situations of disadvantage for the defenders.
