MATCHDAY 36: EVERYTHING IS AT STAKE

12 May 2015
Almost nothing has been defined at Primera with two matchdays remaining; during the weekend the only things sorted were the qualification of Atletico and Villarreal for a European competition.

It seems that the Primera clubs are aware that this is the crucial moment on the season, during matchday 36 everyone was really careful and the consequence was that no one scored three or more goals in one single game, something that occurred for the first time on the season.

And it’s that almost everything remains at stake in la liga. At the top of the standings the only thing that was defined during the weekend is that Atlético Madrid will play one more year in Champions League and that Villarreal CF will play the Europa League.

Atlético got a point in their visit to Levante UD (2-2); however the Madrilenians are still pending to secure the third place, which gives a direct ticket to the biggest tournament in the continent (the 4th place has to play a preliminary round). Valencia CF drew with Real Madrid at the Bernabéu after having a two-goal lead (2-2) and are four points behind plus having the tie-breaker in their favour (they got 4 points playing against Atlético)

In the case of Villarreal CF they broke a nine-match winless streak in the competition with a 1-0 victory hosting Elche CF. They secured the sixth place and will play the next edition of the Europa League. The rest is still to be defined, including the title, though FC Barcelona are closer to celebrate it.

The Catalans defeated Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou (2-0), and increased the difference with Real Madrid to four points after Los Blancos only rescued a point against Valencia CF. The tie-breaker is in favour of Real Madrid, but Barca only need one more victory to secure the title at Primera División.

Valencia CF still have options to end third, but haven’t secured the spot in Champions League, because Sevilla CF are only three points behind. On this matchday the Andalusians only got a point visiting RC Celta (1-1). Another interesting battle is the one for the seventh spot, once again almost all the clubs chasing the slot failed, one of the two exceptions was Málaga CF thanks to their 1-2 win visiting UD Almeria.

The other exception was RCD Espanyol after they claimed a 0-2 win visiting SD Eibar. Athletic Club lost the position after only getting one point hosting Deportivo (1-1). RC Celta also failed after only getting a draw entertaining Sevilla CF. Only two points separate these four clubs.

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Barcelona 90 107 19
2 Real Madrid 86 107 34
3 Atlético 77 67 28
4 Valencia 73 66 29
5 Sevilla 70 66 42
6 Villarreal 57 46 32
7 Malaga 50 39 43
8 Athletic 49 35 39

Córdoba CF remain as the only club that has suffered the relegation. The other two spots at Segunda División remain vacant. Up to six clubs haven’t secured yet the permanence. The true is that all the clubs fighting to survive are living negative moments, the only exception is Granada CF, side that has won the last two games, including the last match against Córdoba CF (2-0).

But the Andalusians remain in relegation after the miraculous draw that Deportivo got at San Mamés with the last-minute goal by Lopo. Granada CF, Deportivo and SD Eibar are tied in points, but the Galicians are ahead for the particular record against the other two teams (7 points added). Getafe CF failed to secure the permanence in this matchday after losing visiting Rayo Vallecano (2-0).

The situation at the bottom of the standings:

place team points GF GA
16 Almeria 32 32 59
17 Deportivo 31 31 58
18 Granada 31 26 64
19 Eibar 31 30 54
20 Córdoba 20 21 63

MATCHDAY 37: DEFINITIONS
With everything at stake it’s unavoidable that almost every game in the penultimate matchday is crucial to define the goals of the season. All the games will be played at the same time on Sunday (19h00 CET), though the issue of the strike remains open. There’s only one game in which there’s nothing at stake: Córdoba CF hosting Rayo Vallecano.

In the remaining nine games there’s an important thing in the middle, either the permanence or upper goals: Villarreal CF Vs. Málaga CF, Elche CF Vs. Athletic Club, Deportivo Vs. Levante UD, Atlético Madrid Vs. FC Barcelona, Real Sociedad Vs. Granada CF, Getafe CF Vs. SD Eibar, RCD Espanyol Vs. Real Madrid, Valencia CF Vs. RC Celta & Sevilla Vs. UD Almeria.
