REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 – LEVANTE 0 (LIGA)

18 May 2015
Depor returned to winning ways after a solid game at the Riazor, but remain in danger due to the other results. The Galicians could need one or even the three points in the last matchday at the Camp Nou.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Víctor Sanchez made one change to the expected starting lineup. It was the presence of Diogo Salomão on the right wing. This was his sixth appearance on the season and the first as a starter.

It was a 4-2-3-1 draw, with Fabricio Agosto covering the goal, Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ defended the right side of the defense, Manuel Pablo played on the left, while the central positions were for Albert Lopo and Sidnei Rechel. Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Salomão attacked from the right wing, Luisinho did it from the left, Lucas Pérez was the playmaker and Oriol Riera was the centre forward.

At Levante UD, coach Lucas Álcaraz presented the expected team for the game. It was a 5-4-1 draw, the main reference in attack was Víctor Casadesús. The environment at the Riazor was great before the game and the stadium presented the best attendance of the season.

FIRST HALF
Peaceful first part for Depor; Levante weren’t interested in attacking, while Depor got an early lead that calmed the nerves. The bad news was that Manuel Pablo was replaced early in the game due to an injury.

Deportivo tried to have the initiative since the start; the first approximation from the locals came at minute 2, Salomão released a cross from the right and Oriol Riera headed the ball out. Meanwhile, Levante left the clear impression since the kick-off that they were content with the draw and did everything they could to waste time.

At minute 9, Manuel Pablo had to be replaced and Juan Dominguez entered the pitch. The club informed that the Canarian sustained a hamstring injury. Dominguez started to perform on the left wing and Luisinho delayed his position to start performing in defence. Depor were still having the initiative, but later was harmless before the thick defence from Levante.

But they were favored by an early goal. Levante’s Sissoko was close to be sent off after two challenges over Luisinho, the second was important as it meant the first goal. The foul was committed on the left wing, Lucas Pérez took the lateral free-kick, the ball passed over Riera, but Lopo was inside the box to push the ball in, visiting goalie  Diego Mariño tried to deflect it, but it was impossible. It’s the second goal for the Catalan, both in consecutive matchdays.

Fort the first time since the arrival of Víctor Sánchez, six matchdays ago, Depor were leading the score in a game and the Galicians felt pretty comfortable about it. Borges was close to score with a scissors-kick attempt that hit a rival inside the box (26’).

Later the game reached an interval of ten minutes in which Depor started to hold on at the back, while Levante timidly were trying to attack, though without creating any harm. Still, the locals were looking closer to score and Salomão was close to do it with a cross inside the area that was deflected to corner-kick (40’)

SECOND HALF
The game was more attractive in the second part, though Levante continued without causing any problem to Fabricio. Juanfran Moreno entered in a defensive modification, ironically it was him who scored the second goal. Depor returned to winning ways after fourteen matchdays.

Alcaraz tried to get some reaction from his team with the entry of El Zhar for Sissoko, but Depor began the second half pushing and earning two corner-kick within the first five minutes.  With the passage of the minutes the visiting team started to have longer ball possessions while Depor started to play on counterattacks.

Still, the Valencians were still missing to complete shots on target and Depor were looking closer to score. At minute 55, a counterattack for the locals ended with Lucas releasing a low cross that Salomão missed inside the area (55’). Two minutes later the Portuguese attempted a shot from the left corner of the area that was deflected to corner-kick.

At minute 59, Lucas released a cross in a free-kick from midfield, Depor broke the offside trap and Oriol Riera headed the ball and it went close to the far post. The first –and lonely- shot on target for the visiting team came until minute 63, it was a long range attempt by Casadesús that was blocked by Fabricio. The Valencians seemed more pending of other results to secure the permanence rather than of their own performance.

Víctor tried to protect the result with the entry of Juanfran for Oriol Riera, while Alcaraz removed a defender with midfielder Camarasa replacing Ramis. The changes left an attractive game on the lawn, because Levante were now pushing while Depor were finding the cracks to release dangerous counterattacks.

As it happened throughout the game, Depor continued to be the side closer to score. At minute 75, Salomão assisted Lucas, then the playmaker made a long run and ended the play with a strong shot that passed close to the far post.

It seemed the Riazor was going to suffer until the final whistle, but Juanfran Moreno appeared to secure the victory with a powerful shot. The side defender was assisted by Lucas Pérez at the left corner of the area, then released an impressive curved shot into the left top-corner of Mariño. Both teams spent the last ten minutes without creating any harm and the last change at Depor was the entry of Toché for Lucas.

AFTER THE GAME
Finally Depor break the bad streak with a deserved victory before a passive rival that seemed more interested in other results than of searching for a positive outcome. Levante’s players celebrated as soon as they were noticed of other results as it meant to secure the permanence. The Galicians, meanwhile, made a solid game and this time had the needed aim to net two goals through three shots on target.

The problem for Depor are the other results, the Galicians are out of relegation, but only two points above UD Almeria and SD Eibar. The first lost at Sevilla CF (2-1) and the second got a draw visiting Getafe CF (1-1). Granada CF beat Real Sociedad on the road (0-3) and the Andalusians are tied in points with Los Blanquiazules, so Deportivo will probably need one or even three points in the visit to FC Barcelona (Sunday, 18h30 CET), side that’s already the champion of la liga.
