REVIEW: SAN PEDRO 1 – FABRIL 0 (PLAYOFFS)

08 Jun 2015
Once again Depor B lost the first-leg in the road to Segunda B. The locals dominated the actions in the first part and scored from the penalty spot. Fabril was the best team in the second half, but wasn’t able to score.

BEFORE THE GAME
Captain Adrián Martínez was returning from suspension and went directly into the starting lineup. It was the only modification made to the 4-2-3-1 lineup that faced SCD Durango on the previous week at Abegondo. Cañi suffered an injury in the warm up and was replaced on the bench by Toni Insua.

David Gómez was the keeper, Adrián was the right-back defender, Jorge Fernández performed on the left side, the centre-backs were Iago López and Róber Suárez. Sam Piette and Álvaro Queijeiro were the centre midfielders, Ángel Fernández was attacking from the right wing, Miguel Cardoso did it from the left, Marcos Remeseiro was the playmaker and Dani Iglesias was the centre forward.

The rival in the second round of the playoffs is UD San Pedro, a club from Marbella in Andalusia. They ended third in their group and are targeting to play in Segunda B for the fourth time in their history.  The coach is Adrián Cervera and was presenting their strongest lineup, a 4-4-2 draw with Juan Francisco García ‘Juanfri’ as the main reference in attack. He’s the top scorer at the team with 18 goals during the regular season.

THE MATCH
Decent game by Deportivo B; having problems in the first half, but dominating in the second. The fact is that it lost the first-leg as it missed ideas to finalize the plays, just to point out the fact that Depor’s lads only completed four shots on target despite having the ball possession.

The game started with Fabril having the ball possession and trying to attack through the sides. But the first chance to score was for the locals. A cross from the left couldn’t be cleared properly by Jorge and Juanfri couldn’t score from close range before David (5’)

After this opportunity the locals started to look more dangerous, with fast attacks that were giving problems to the defence. At minute 8 Álvaro Olmo missed the target from the edge of the area, three minutes later Mauri completed the first shot on target in the game, but it was an easy catch for David Gómez.

Depor B had their first opportunities between minutes 13 & 14; the main one was a cross from Remeseiro that Cardoso didn’t meet inside the area. One minute later Juanfri had a new chance to score for San Pedro, but he missed the target again.

Depor’s lads were having problems with the outcome of the ball, they were losing the ball near to their area due to the pressure from the locals and that’s why San Pedro were having so many chances. At the same time they were missing too many passes and therefore missed presence in attack.

The first big chance for Fabril came at minute 22; Jorge assisted Dani Iglesias, but the attempt from the striker was saved by local goalie Javi Muñoz. That was one of the three shots on target made by Fabril in the game.  At minute 30, Juanfri missed a new chance for San Pedro, again heading the ball out after a cross from Mauri.

At this height on the game Fabril were feeling more calmed over the grass, having long ball possessions, but missing more depth to create more opportunities. Ángel and Cardoso were switching positions and created some danger but the team was unable to transform the plays into shots on target. The second shot between the posts for Fabril was a direct free-kick by Cardoso that was blocked by Javi Muñoz (39’).

It seemed the game was going to end scoreless in the first part, but at the last minute Róber committed a penalty over Juanfri, then captain Álvaro Olmo fooled David Gómez to score the goal from the spot.

Fabril started the second part pushing up front, trying to attack and earning a corner-kick in the first play, but it continued to face the same lack of effectiveness to end the plays with a shot on target. The first clear opportunities for the visitors came with shots by Dani Iglesias (54’) an Cardoso (55’) that missed the target.

The first modification in the game was the entry of Juan López for Ángel. The entry of Juan refreshed the attack as Ángel appeared in the first minutes and later disappeared with the pressure from San Pedro.

Jorge was pretty active in the second half, attacking from the left side and San Pedro started to suffer. At minute 65, one of his plays was close to end with a shot from Dani Iglesias, but he lost the ball at the last second, again Fabril didn’t want the way to transform its dominance into a shot. One minute later Juan López was close to score with a shot from inside the area that was deflected by a defender.

The biggest chance for Fabril in the half came at minute 72; Juan López drilled the ball into the box and Dani Iglesias was close to connect the ball, but it was cleared by a defender first. Eight minutes later a long collective play ended with Remeseiro shooting on target, but it was saved by Javi Muñoz. After this play Cardoso completed the fourth and last shot on target for Depor B, it was a free-kick that didn’t give any problem to San Pedro’s goalie.

At minute 83, Jorge was close to score with a long-range attempt. The left-back is one of the pleasant surprises in the season, always participate in attack and solid defending. Taboada was the second change at Fabril as he replaced a tired Remeseiro. The final change was the entry of French Massampu for Piette. Fabril pushed within the final minutes but it was unable to create more chances.

AFTER THE GAME
New loss for Fabril in the playoffs; as it happened against Durango, Depor’s lads lost the first game after playing a decent game that deserved a better reward. San Pedro was the best team in the first half and Fabril dominated in the second, but it only completed four shots on target in the whole match despite having the ball possession. The returning leg will be played at Abegondo on next Sunday (17h00); Fabril need to win 2-0 to pass to the final round.

Comments by Manu Mosquera: “The game was similar to the one against Durango. I believe we made a very good game, I liked it. Since minute 15 we weren’t fine in divided balls, but in the second part we were better and had two clear opportunities. The series remain open and we have chances at our home.”
