Jonás Gutiérrez was presented on Friday at Abegondo. The last signing of the summer window repeated the phrase that this is a great opportunity to him. The winger also said that he can also perform as a centre midfielder.

Friday was a bust day at Abegondo; after the last training session of the week, president Tino Fernández and sporting advisor Fernando Vidal addressed the media, the main issue was to present Jonás Gutiérrez, the last signing of the summer window 2015/16. The Argentine completed the second part of the medicals and later talked to coach Víctor Sánchez, then he was presented after the training session.

Tino Fernández welcomed the player during the press conference held at Abegondo, “Today we are celebrating the last presentation with the last signing that’s closing the squad for this season, someone that you already contracted after the first part of the medicals. The presentations are pointless as his story is pretty well known, so I want to publicly wish him good luck and give him a warm welcome.”

Then Jonás addressed the media, “I’m pretty happy for arriving to this institution. I had great references from Coloccini, Xisco Jiménez and Poroto Lux, so I’m pretty happy with this opportunity. I talked two minutes with the coach and there will be time to talk. I liked him. He’s a young coach that has a lot to bring to the club.”

He refused the idea that he’s one of the star signings of the summer, “nothing at all. I arrive in order to give my best and help in this project. I am not the star. The important thing is the team, the team should be the star and if we give our best then it will be easier in order to get positive results and have a positive dynamic. The individualities won’t save the season, but the group will do it.”

The Argentine man explained that he feels fit to play, but leaves the decision of when he can debut in the hands of the coach,  “I’m fine as I have been training with Vélez and with my personal trainer, so I have pace. I will train during the weekend taking advantage of the break. It’s good in order to seize the situation and later, on Monday, I will train with the group. When I would be ready to play? I don’t know when, the coach is the one that will decide when I could be with the eleven men that go out to play. The coach is who decides. This is a squad with a lot of options, so it won’t be easy.”

The player also explained how he chose to play for Depor, “I wanted to make the best decision and there were offers that didn’t convince me, and when the chance to join Depor came out, in a competitive league that I know pretty well, I didn’t think twice. So, I tried to make the best decision though it came out at the time of the closure of the market. It was good to wait.”

He had a story after been asked if it will hard to play in this team, “You cannot surrender, no matter if you play a lot of minutes or not. During a season a lot of things can happen. Last year I had to live a treatment and by January I didn’t think I was going to play at the club, and later ended playing in nine of the last ten games, and the full ninety minutes. So the spot was open and you cannot surrender, you must be positive. You can come thinking you are late and end been the most important player on the season.”

Finally, Jonás explained that he can perform on both wings and as centre midfielder, “I played a lot on the left wing, but in Newcastle I had to play as a centre midfielder as we faced a lot of casualties due to the injuries. My natural position is the left wing and also the right, but I can adapt to other positions.”
