THE ARGENTINES AT DEPORTIVO

09 Oct 2015
With Jonás and Cartabia, 19 Argentine players have performed for Deportivo at Primera División. It’s the highest number for a county at the Galician club. Brazil is the second name in the list with 17.

Winger Jonás Gutiérrez debuted on last weekend with Deportivo, playmaker Fede Cartabia did it a month before taking the tally of Argentine players at the Galician club to 19 (Primera División). This is the highest number at the club for a single country followed closely by Brazil (17).

The predilection for Argentine players has always been present at the club, in the 1940’s the club lived its first golden years thanks to men like Julio Corcuera, Oswaldo García, Rafael Franco and Francisco Reboredo, times when the team clinched the 2nd place at Primera for the first time.

In the 1990’s, despite the Brazilians started to call the attention of the officials and turned to be the main source of foreign reinforcements, there was a second boom with the arrival of players like Turu Flores, Lionel Scaloni and Aldo Duscher, the last two are the Argentine players with more Primera games at Depor. In the case of Scaloni he reached the 200 matches and Duscher player 1997 meetings at the elite.

In recent years the presence of Argentine players was reduced to one or two and in some cases to zero, however the number increased within the last two seasons. Last year Luis Fariña joined German Lux as the two Argentines at Depor, and on the current campaign there are three as the keeper was joined by Cartabia and Jonás Gutiérrez.
