Víctor Sánchez has been switching the 4-4-2 and the 4-2-3-1 during this season obtaining very good results; the key has been the presence of Lucas or Fajr behind the centre forward.

It has been hard to predict the lineups that coach Víctor Sánchez Del Amo is using in this season’s games, not only because he doesn’t want to talk about it before the meetings, but also because he makes unpredictable changes that even occur within the games.

On this season the Madrilenian coach has been alternating between the 4-4-2 and the 4-2-3-1; the main difference is how the second attacker is moving up front and how the midfielders and the wingers cover the open space.

Another big difference is the position of every player, because although the men trend to be the same their positions are different. As example Faycal Fajr, who has performed on both wings (3 times in 8 appearances) and also as a playmaker, similar case than Lucas Pérez, who has also performed as a centre forward.

A curious thing is that Fajr an Lucas seem to perform better when they are playing at the centre. The clearest example is Fajr, who had a major role in the game against Real Betis, scoring a goal and bringing an assist, when he was acting as the playmaker in the scheme, while in other meetings, like the past one against Athletic Club, he had a secondary role performing on the right wing.

Víctor likes to adapt the draw according to the rival and the moment of the games, so he has been switching the draws and the positions within the meetings. It happened against Sporting Gijón, time when he switched the rare 4-3-3 of the start for a 4-4-2 in the second half when the team was already losing 2-3.

Other factors like the strengths of the rivals are also dictating how the lineups are decided. In this sense, on last Sunday, it wasn’t strange to see Laure going out of the lineup in order to open a slot for Juanfran, because the aerial game of Athletic was a main worry for the coach.

For the visit to Málaga CF, Víctor has tested a 4-4-2 draw with Lucas and Luis Alberto as the two attackers, though this was only the first test made during the week. It’s also expected that Laure will be pushing to get back the spot at the right-back position, while Juanfran could be moved back into the right wing.
