REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 1– ATLÉTICO 1 (LIGA)

31 Oct 2015
Night and day at the Riazor. A poor Depor during the first half suffered a major change for the second part, after not completing a shot in 45 minutes the team ended equalizing and hitting the post, always before a speculative Atlético.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Víctor Sánchez was making several changes; Laure returned, while Jonás Gutiérrez, Albert Lopo and Fede Cartabia were starters. It was a 4-2-3-1 draw, with German Lux covering the goal, Laure performed at the right side of the defense, Fernando Navarro did it at the left, while Sidnei Rechel joined Lopo at the central positions.

Pedro Mosquera and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Jonás Gutiérrez was the improvised playmaker, Fayçal Fajr performed on the left flank and Lucas Pérez was the centre forward.

At Atlético Madrid, Diego Simeone presented the expected 4-4-2 formation. Ex-Depor Filipe Luis was a starter, while Antoine Griezmann and Jackson Martínez were the references in attack.

FIRST HALF
Very poor display by Deportivo in the first part. The Galicians were looking solid at defence, but it’s also true that Atlético weren’t pressing too hard, but as soon as the Madrilenians scored then the Galicians lost the order and were lucky to not allow a second goal. Just to point out that Depor didn’t make any shot in this half while Atlético made ten.

The plan of both teams was clear since the beginning; Atlético were feeling comfortable having the ball possession, but didn’t push too hard in the quest for the goal, while Deportivo were holding back and only attacked in a few counterattacks that ended with Lucas facing two defenders by his own. Therefore the game missed excitement in long frames on this half.

The first chance in the game came at minute 12, Jackson Martínez was left alone inside the area after Koké managed to drill the ball between two defenders, but Sidnei arrived first to clear the danger before the Colombian attacker. It was going to be a common picture in the first part.

At minute 14, Depor had a good chance, their lonely in the first half, again after Lucas was about to get the ball at the edge of the area during a counterattack, but before the attacker began to run towards the goal Godín managed to clear the danger. Seven minutes later a new drilled pass was searching for Jackson and again Sidnei was there to clear the ball.

The game was already boring when the visiting team managed to open the scoresheet.  Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco released a cross from the left, the ball was deflected and entered the area, Jackson covered it and Tiago Mendes was at the edge of the area to end releasing a strong and low shot past Lux.

Until this point Deportivo were a passive team and a reaction was expected, but what happened was that Atlético was the side accelerating, while Depor were knocked down.  The Madrilenians almost scored the second goal during a corner-kick in which Godín headed the ball at the far post, it ended hitting the crossbar and then Lux caught it.

And before the pause the visitors had two chances, first Ferreira-Carrasco got the ball almost at the penalty spot and his strong shot hit a rival and went over the bar (44’), and in the resulting corner-kick Griezmann fired from the far post after collecting the high cross and the ball hit the net by the outside.

SECOND HALF
It seems that both teams not only exchanged their side on the field after pause, but also their attitude. Because Depor were an irreconcilable team compared to the first part, now the locals recovered their passing game at midfield and had more chances than Atlético, to the point that the negative stats of the first half were practically balanced with the performance on the second. And the Madrilenians paid the price for their apathy with a big error at defense.

The final part started with Depor having more chances in three minutes than in the entire first part. Firstly Jonás released a cross from the left, the ball was going into the near post of Oblak, who collected the ball first before the arrival of Lucas (47’), and in the next play Cartabia made a solo-play at the edge of the area and his attempt went over the crossbar.

Depor were a completely different team in this half, it had the ball possession and moved the ball in the offensive side, always with the complicity of an Atlético that were trying to hold on and then release a counterattack, but they didn’t complete any shot in the first 35 minutes.

Meanwhile Depor were completing their first two shots on target in the game. At minute 56, Cartabia released a long-range attempt that was blocked by Oblack after hitting the ground first, two minutes later the Argentine attempted a drilling shot and again the Slovenian goalie made the save. Cartabia was unstoppable on the right wing and became a major threat for Atlético.

One of the keys for the big change was to see Pablo Mosquera finally settled at midfield, his short passes were directing the traffic while Fayçal Fajr started to combine with Lucas and also with the side defenders.

Then Víctor made the first substitution and Luis Alberto replaced Jonás. The second substitution was the entry of Juanfran for Laure. Jonás had a poor game performing at the centre, though Luis Alberto didn’t have enough time to create any good chance.

Atlético were playing with danger, after been close to score the 0-2 before halftime now they were starting to feel overwhelmed and ended paying the price in a big error at defense. Giménez lost the ball at the left corner of the box before the pressure from Lucas, the Galician attacker got it and coolly eluded two rivals and also Oblack crossing the box until scoring from close range with a gently touch. It’s his sixth goal in liga.

Atlético reacted for the final ten minutes, but they never had a clear chance despite their pressure. Actually it was Depor the side closer to win the game after Fajr hit the post after firing from the edge of the area (86’).

AFTER THE GAME
Two different halves; in the first Atlético didn’t show too much but deserved to reach the pause with the 0-2, while in the second Depor were much better and could have even won the game with the late strike by Fajr. Again the Galicians showed spirit to overcome a deficit and ended picking a point.

For now the Blanquiazul teams remains in the sixth position and have only lost two games after ten matchdays. On next Saturday Víctor’s team travel to Valencia in order to play against Levante UD (Ciutat de Valencia, 18h15 CET).
