BAD START FOR THE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS

15 Nov 2015
Borges got injured with Costa Rica, while Fajr and Medunjanin were unable to have minutes with Morocco and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Borges could be out for three months.

Not a good start for the three international players of Deportivo. The worst part was for Celso Borges, who was disputing with Costa Rica the debuting match in the qualifying round for the World Cup 2018 hosting Haiti.

The Central American team won the game (1-0), but Celso had to leave the pitch just before half-time. The midfielder was searching for the ball and suddenly broke a toe on his left foot at the moment of stepping into the ground. He left the pitch and returned for some seconds, but later was stretched off as he felt pain.

The first scans confirmed a fifth metatarsal fracture on his left foot. It’s a tricky injury that could left him out for two or three months, meaning he won’t play any game in 2015. The last player that suffered a similar injury was Cezary Wilk and he spent three months on the sidelines.

Borges is one of the seven players at the first team that had played in all of the first eleven matchdays in liga, now coach Víctor will have to find another partner for Pedro Mosquera. The candidates are Juan Dominguez, Álex Bergantiños and Haris Medunjanin.

Precisely, neither was a good start for the other two international players of Deportivo. Haris Medunjanin spent on the bench the full game between Bosnia and Herzegovina hosting Republic of Ireland in the first-leg of the UEFA 2016 playoffs.  To make things worse the Bosnians only clinched a 1-1 draw and now play the definitive game on Monday on the road needing to win or two draw scoring two goals.

In the case of Fayçal Fajr, he neither was able to debut with Morocco as “The Lions” were hosting Equatorial Guinea in the first-leg of the CAF Qualification for the 2018 World cup (2nd round). At least in his case the Moroccans clinched a comfortable 2-0 win that brings some clam for the returning leg scheduled for Sunday.
