MIXED NEWS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS

18 Nov 2015
Fajr debuted with Morocco and passed to the next round in the road to Russia 2018, while Medunjanin will miss the Euro 2016 and Borges will be out of action until next year.

The three international players of Deportivo lived very different situations during the break. The man with the worst scenario was Celso Borges. The midfielder broke a toe on his left foot during the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifying game between Costa Rica and Haiti.

He was stretched off and the first scans confirmed the fracture, then he traveled to A Coruña on Sunday and the club’s doctors confirmed the injury, and also that he will need surgery, which means that he will be without football until 2016. The doctors announced that he will be off between three and four months.

Medunjanin after failing to score against Ireland

Neither good was the break for Haris Medunjanin. Bosnia and Herzegovina were facing the playoff round to qualify to the Euro 2016. In the first-leg against Republic of Ireland, Depor’s midfielder was sat on the bench and saw how his team could only get a 1-1 draw at home.

In the returning leg Haris was a starter and played 69 minutes in the 0-2 defeat that eliminated them. Truly it was a bad game for the Bosnians, to the point that before minute 89 the team only completed one shot on target, which was made by Medunjanin at the beginning of the second part, then the visiting team hit the woodwork at minute 90 just when the score was already 2-0.

Morocco’s team that faced Equatorial Guinea for the returning leg

Who lived a perfect weekend was Fayçal Fajr. The playmaker was picked for the first time by Morocco ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifying round. In this second stage the Moroccans were facing a two-leg series against Equatorial Guinea, in the first leg played at home Fajr stayed on the bench and witnessed a 2-0 win for his country.

In the returning leg Fajr debuted and played as a starter. He had a solid performance acting as a playmaker behind El Arabi though Morocco suffered until the end with the 0-1 loss. He was replaced at minute 83. In the end the aggregate score was 2-1 and Morocco advanced to the group stage (third round), in this phase they will be drawn in a group with other three countries and the winner of the group will qualify for the World Cup.
