PREVIEW: LLAGOSTERA – DEPORTIVO (COPA)

02 Dec 2015
Rotations at Deportivo as Víctor will present a different version visiting UE Llagostera playing for the Copa, the rival represents a Cinderella story and could be in relegation at Segunda, but has showed signs of improvement lately.

STATISTICS: BAD RESULTS IN RECENT EDITIONS
Deportivo have been unable to pass the last-32 round of Copa Del Rey during each one of the last four seasons. Three times the Galicians were eliminated in this round by a Primera side: Levante UD (2011/2012), RCD Mallorca (2012/2013) and Málaga CF (2014/2015), while in one opportunity it was eliminated in the previous round (third preliminary round) by a Segunda side: Real Jaén (2013/14). To mention that this is the 400th match of Deportivo playing for Copa Del Rey. The Galicians clinched 163 victories, 85 draws and suffered 151 defeats. The team has scored 635 goals and allowed 583.

The rival in the tie is UE Llagostera, a Catalan club that despite been funded in 1947 it is having the first meeting with Deportivo in an official competition. What happens is that they spent almost the half of their history in low leagues and only within the last five campaigns they played for the first time at Segunda B and Segunda División A. Their best achievement in Copa was to qualify for the last-32 round during the season 2012/13, at the time they were eliminated by Valencia CF (agg. 1-5).

UE Llagostera had a poor start at Liga Adelante, league where they are playing for the second straight season. They are currently in relegation (19th), but are showing signs of improvement after winning two of the last three games, both playing at home: 2-1 Vs. CD Numancia and 2-0 Vs. SD Huesca.

DEPORTIVO: ROTATIONS
Coach Víctor Sánchez is ready to make a complete facelift after repeating the same lineup within the last two league meetings. Actually, seven of the starters in those games are out of the roster, while four players from Deportivo B have been included in the list for the clash: goalkeepers David Gómez and Anxo Pérez, plus centre-back Róber Suarez and winger Óscar ´Pinchi’ García.

So, it is a chance for players missing minutes, especially for the ones that haven’t debuted yet on this league campaign: Manuel Pablo, Haris Medunjanin, Saúl Garcia and Miguel Cardoso. The four of them were tested as probable starters during Monday’s session.

It’s expected a 4-2-3-1 lineup, with Manu Fernández covering the goal, The Asturian is playing his first official game with Depor since 2011 (2-3 Vs. UD Almeria for Copa, January 19). Laure plays at the right side in defence, Saúl debuts in an official game performing on the left, while Manuel Pablo performs as a centre-back alongside Albert Lopo,

Juan Dominguez and Medunjanin are the centre midfielders, Fede Cartabia will attack from the right wing, Miguel Cardoso debuts in an official game performing on the left flank, Fayçal Fajr is the playmaker and Oriol Riera is the centre forward.

Goalkeeper Fabricio Agosto didn’t end Monday’s training after suffering a new relapse on his knee injury, he is joining Celso Borges, Jonás Gutiérrez and Luis Alberto at the injury room. The rest of players that weren’t picked for this game will have a normal week in A Coruña as they will continue training ahead of the match with Sevilla CF.

Cani was encouraging his team mates in order to pass the round, ”We are going out for the victory. I am convinced about it, though later one thousand things can happen. I was lucky enough to reach two finals and it’s pretty when you reach this stage. The first rounds aren’t too pretty, especially for the Primera teams as they face Segunda clubs. You visit tough fields with rivals playing at 200%. You must make an effort in order to pass, because it is worthy.”

List of picked players (19): Manu, David Gómez, Anxo Pérez (goalkeepers); Manuel Pablo, Laure, Arribas, Lopo, Róber, Saúl García (defenders); Juan Domínguez, Fayçal Fajr, Medunjanin, Cani, Cartabia, Luisinho, Oscar García, Cardoso (midfielders); Oriol Riera & Jonathan Rodríguez (attackers).

LLAGOSTERA: THE CLUB OF THE FIVE PROMOTIONS
It’s one of the most amazing stories in recent years in Spain; Unió Esportiva Llagostera, a small club from Catalonia, is at Segunda División after been in the 8th tier just eleven years ago. And they clinched these five promotions without a big budget and neither big players (only six players with experience at Primera at the current squad) and even with a coach without a proper license and that’s the husband of the club’s president.

The city of Llagostera (Girona) only has 8,200 inhabitants, which means the lower population ever for a Segunda A club. The secret of Los Blanquivermells is sacrifice, hard work and the direction of coach Oriol Alsina, who only got his license at the beginning of the season (before he was sharing the role with an assistant with license, a condition imposed by the RFEF).

So, their first three seasons at Segunda B took place between 2011 and 2014 and last year, after clinching the promotion to Liga Adelante, they were even close to Primera after spending some matchdays in the second round among the first six places. Now they are in relegation but showing the same progression that transformed them into the sensation on last campaign.

Alsina will make rotations for the Copa match, mainly as in the last games his defence has been affected by the injuries. Argentine Nicolás Ratti, who in liga is the substitute keeper, covers the goal, Aimar Moratalla performs at the right side of the defence, Enric Pi covers the left flank, while the centre backs are Fran Cruz and Jorge García.

Jorge Ortiz ‘Tito’ and Brazilian Givanildo Pulgas da Silva ‘Giva’ are the wingers, Jordy Lopez and José Antonio Ríos are the centre midfielders, then Benja Martínez and Eloy Gila are the centre forwards.

The captain of the team, goalkeeper René Román, is convinced of the chances for his team, "Why we cannot eliminate Deportivo? We have a squad full of quality. They are a team that allows to play. I'm sure that a Primera team will not feel comfortable at all in our stadium. We must play our cards and if we do, then I am convinced that they will suffer."

List of picked players: The coach didn’t release a list, the final list for the game will be known minutes before the meeting.
