Depor remain undefeated, but it can also be said that it dropped two points. The Galicians claimed the lead and, after suffering in the first part and controlling the actions in the second, it allowed a goal in their only error in the game.

Coach Víctor Sánchez was making one change after repeating the lineup in consecutive weeks. It was the appearance of Oriol Riera as a starter sending Jonathan Rodriguez to the bench. The Catalan man was the only starter from the Copa that was repeating his presence in liga.

It was a 4-4-2 draw with German Lux covering the goal, Juanfran Moreno performed at the right side of the defence, Fernando Navarro played at the left, while Alejandro Arribas and Sidnei Rechel were the centre backs. Álex Bergantiños and Pedro Mosquera were the centre midfielders, Cani performed at the right wing, Luisinho did it at the left, then Lucas Pérez joined Oriol Riera up front.

At Sevilla CF, coach Unai Emery presented a 4-2-3-1 figure, with ex-Celta Krohn-Deli as the main novelty. He was the playmaker in the scheme. Vitolo Machín, Yevhen Konoplyanka and Kevin Gameiro were the main references in attack. The temperature was 12 degrees Celsius, but there was ice over the lawn.

After ten slow minutes, the game turned to be really quick, with the ball going from area to area. Depor were lucky to have the advantage by half-time, because it scored the goal and later suffered the counterattack by the Andalusians, who never knew how to surpass Arribas and Sidnei.

The game had a slow start, both sides were studying each other and there were no scoring chances within the first ten minutes. The only thing that happened was a muscle injury for Oriol Riera, problem that forced an early replacement. Jonathan Rodriguez entered the field and he was involved in the first chance to score for the Galicians.

It was a counterattack in which Lucas Pérez got the ball at the edge of the area, he ran a couple of meters and tried to chip the ball over Sergio Rico, but the visiting goalie deflected the ball to corner-kick (12’).

The first clear opportunity to score just opened the game, because the actions turned to be an exchange of blows, with both sides moving the ball fast and releasing quick counterattacks, but both sides were having problems to end the plays.

And then Depor scored the first goal in the game. Jonathan was fouled at the edge of the area, in the resulting free-kick Lucas Pérez released a drilling shot that went into the far post, it seemed that Sergio Rico could have cleared the danger, but the ball was coming too fast and the goalie was unable to touch it.

It is the tenth goal on the season for Lucas, who has scored in five straight matchdays. Only six players at Depor had bene unable to chain a similar streak: Paquirri, Pahiño, Bebeto, Rivaldo, Makaay and Pandiani.

The goal didn’t change the script as Depor and Sevilla continued releasing quick attacks, the Andalusians were pretty dangerous with their counterattack on the right wing. The main one was a cross from Gameiro that Yevhen Konoplyanka connected at the far post, but the Ukrainian missed the target (30’).

Four minutes later a new counterattack, this time on the right wing, ended with a cross that Gameiro met at the box, but his crossed shot missed the target. Depor were suffering, unable to stop the counterattacks from the Andalusians and with the passage of the minute it disappeared from Sevilla’s area. But the Galicians reached the pause with the advantage, if the midfielders were unable to stop the counterattacks then the plays were ending with Sidnei and Arribas, the later was the best player in the half.

The game was more paused in the second part, because Depor were better placed and blocking the ways for the counterattack. Still, the team ended allowing a goal in an isolated error that tainted a perfect game in defence.

The final part started with a shot by Jonathan that hit a defender and was later blocked by Sergio Rico (47’). Three minutes later the Uruguayan had a new chance to score, it was after a lateral free-kick at the left, he collected the ball at the right side of the area and his drilling and crossed attempt passed close to the far post.

Depor were better placed compared to the first half, the Andalusians weren’t finding the same spaces and therefore the locals were avoiding the counterattack actions of the first part. If Arribas shone at defence during the first part, in this half it was Sidnei, always opportune cutting the passes at the back. Meanwhile, Jonathan was very dangerous in the counterattack. Emery didn’t like what he was watching and ordered a double change. Reyes and Llorente were now on the pitch.

Víctor Sánchez reacted allowing the entry of Laure for Cani. Once again Cani had a great first half, but was now tired and the coach preferred to cover the space on the right wing with a side defender.

Sevilla CF were still looking good moving the ball over the grass, but as it happened in the first part they were missing aim and ideas to end the plays; in this sense their first shot on target came until minute 64. It was a drilling shot by Grzegorz Krychowiak blocked by Lux

The final change for Depor was the entry of Fayçal Fajr replacing Luisinho. The Portuguese had big problems in the whole game, the entry of Fajr brought some fresh ideas in attack, though he was never a factor in this match.

At minute 75, Lucas fired from the edge of the area after been assisted by Jonathan. Sergio made the save, in the next play Sevilla CF equalized. It was corner-kick action in which the defence failed and two substitutes were involved; first Fernando Llorente headed the ball and later Iborra was there to push the ball in from close range.

The equalizer froze Depor; though Sevilla only had one more chance to score. It was a header of Llorente that missed the target (83’). Depor had the ball within the final minutes, but the locals didn’t create any harm, only a couple of corner-kicks without consequences.

Mixed reading from the game; Depor started well and claimed the lead, it suffered a lot in the first part with the counterattack by Sevilla. In the second part Los Blanquiazules were controlling the things but allowed an equalizer just when they were tasting a third straight victory. Lucas scored for the fifth straight matchday, Arribas and Sidnei were great, while Jonathan shone in the second part.

Deportivo will have to wait to see Sunday’s results in order to continue in the European zone. The injury of Riera might keep him at bay for a few weeks and on next Saturday the team travels to the Camp Nou in order to face FC Barcelona (16h00 CET). Pedro Mosquera is suspended for that game after collecting a fifth yellow card on the season.
