THINKING OF FC BARCELONA

10 Dec 2015
Víctor will travel to Barcelona with five casualties at the squad and knowing that next week is complicated as the Copa returns. The rival could end missing Neymar.

Another busy week for Deportivo with three games to be played in a frame of six days. On Saturday the Galician team has the big challenge of visiting FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou (16h00 CET) then, on midweek, it faces the second-leg in Copa against UE Llagostera (Wednesday, 20h00 CET).

It’s expected that coach Víctor Sánchez will follow the same routine of splitting the squad in two during next week, but he will have to pick players from Fabril in Copa as he is facing important casualties. Just during last weekend he lost two men for the trip to Catalonia: centre midfielder Pedro Mosquera, who is suspended with five yellow cards, and striker Oriol Riera, who suffered a mild injury on his left thigh (Biceps femoris muscle), problem that will sideline him for at least two weeks.

In this way there are five confirmed casualties for the game against FC Barcelona. The other three are the mid-term case of winger Jonás Gutiérrez (thigh), plus the long-term cases of goalkeeper Fabricio Agosto (knee) and centre midfielder Celso Borges (toe).

Playmaker Fede Cartabia skipped two training sessions during the week due to a groin problem, but he should be available for Saturday, while the good news is that Luis Alberto will finally receive the medical okay to play after missing the last four games in liga. He could be used on Saturday or the coach could opt in delay his return for the Copa.

At FC Barcelona, all eyes are upon Neymar. The Brazilian star picked an adductor muscle injury in a training session previously to the Champions League game visiting Bayer Leverkusen. It’s a minor problem, but coach Luis Enrique won’t risk the player, especially since the Catalans are already qualified. He should be fit for Saturday, but it is speculated that he will be rested as Barca is about to travel for the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

It would a logical decision as, despite been the leaders, FC Barcelona have been struggling due to the shortness of the squad and the injuries. Currently there are two players out of Saturday’s game, centre midfielder Rafinha Alcántara who is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, and side defender Douglas Pereira, who is expected to return until January due to a foot injury.

Other two players, defender Jérémy Mathieu and midfielder Sergi Roberto, missed the game against Valencia CF due to knocks and it isn’t clear if both will be available for Saturday.  Meanwhile, playmaker Andrés Iniesta, centre-back Gerard Piqué and right-back Dani Alvés were rested in Champions League and should be back to face Deportivo.
