RECORD OF DRAWS

10 Feb 2016
With 13 draws in liga, Deportivo only need three more in order to establish a new record at the club. Six of those draws occurred after the team had the advantage in the scoresheet.

After only 23 La Liga matchdays, Deportivo already have 13 draws. It’s the highest number among the top-five leagues in Europe (Spain, England, Germany, Italy and France). Also, it is only two less than the historic record at the club.

In three different seasons Depor ended with 15 draws, the first one was during the Segunda campaign 1987/88, then it happened again in the season 1991/92 and the last opportunity was for the campaign 2004/05. Now, with 15 matchdays remaining, it seems that Víctor’s men will easily surpass this number.

To point out that 7 of the 13 draws took place with the team playing on the road, the record at the club is eight away draws and it happened in three different opportunities: 1982/83 (Segunda), 1986/87 (Segunda) and 2004/05 (Primera).

A draw could be interpreted as a lost opportunity as the team ends dropping two points, and that’s what happened in 6 of the 13 draws, because in six opportunities Depor had a one-goal advantage and ended conceded a goal to end tied. The most painful one was the 1-1 with Valencia CF, match in which Los Chés scored at the last second when the Galicians were grabbing the three points (January 24).

But there’s a B side in this story, because in five opportunities the team was able to react after been down in the scoresheet at some point in the game. The most remarkable situations took place during the home game with Athletic Club (October 18) and the visit to FC Barcelona (December 12).

In both opportunities the team was losing 0-2 at the middle of the second half and in both games the team scored twice within the last minutes to grab the draw. In these kinds of cases it can be said that the team earned a valuable point. Also to remember games like the visit to Real Sociedad (January 16), because the draw came with the team suffering a lot and close to lose the meeting. So, a draw is not always a bad result.
