NOTES FROM THE GAME AGAINST ATLÉTICO

14 Mar 2016
The downward spiral continues for a Depor that remains without finding the ideas and solutions to fix the problems. New irregular performance by Cartabia and Jonathan, while Róber debuted at Primera.

The five notes from the game Vs. Atlético Madrid:

1- Negative streak: The winless streak of Deportivo has been extended to fifteen games (13 in liga and 2 in Copa Del Rey). The Galician side is only one game away from tying last season’s mark of straight winless matches at Primera, something that caused the exit of Víctor Fernández. Another reason why the next clash with Levante UD can be considered as a final.

With European football about to complete the first three months in 2016, the same four teams remain winless in the year among the top five leagues: Deportivo (La Liga), Crystal Palace (Premier League), Atalanta SPA (Serie A) and GFCO Ajaccio (Ligue 1)

2- Apathetic?:Once again Deportivo left the impression of been an apathetic team, but the picture can be deceiving, because it cannot be said that the team played a bad first half, the problem is that Depor’s players continue to show a lack of confidence and ideas, main characteristics during this negative streak. With the team without knowing what do, it ends giving the impression that doesn’t want to do things.

And it’s that Depor is a flat team in attack, in this game it never knew how to attack and only completed six shots (two on target). It’s a completely different picture to the team of the first round, that Depor were always finding the way to intimidate the rival, now the rival lives without hurries, so each error turns to be huge, especially if it means to allow a goal as it turns to define a game.

3- The difference was the second half: Definitely Deportivo didn’t deserve to add a point in this game, but the fact is that the team was in the game until half-time. The reason was that the few errors committed in the first half.  It was well placed on the pitch and it only conceded two corner-kicks in set-pieces.

But the team lost the concentration for the second part, and in only ten minutes in the final part it had already conceded four corners. The changes in the draw, with the team passing from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2, just increased the mismatches and the team could have even allowed more goals.

4- Flashes from Cartabia & Jonathan: Once again Fede Cartabia and Jonathan Rodríguez left the impression of not been constant players. Cartabia was coming after a great game against Málaga CF, but now he was intermittent, he appeared a couple of times in the first half and had the best chance to score in the second, but he smashed the ball into the body of a rival when the goalkeeper was already defeated. He was replaced as the coach decided to put one more attacker.

Same picture for Jonathan, the Uruguayan appeared a couple of times in the first part without been a worry for Atlético, and in the second half his only appearance was a good play on the left wing that ended with a crossed shot that missed the target by inches. Too little from two players that arrived with high expectations.

5- Manuel Pablo starter, league debut for Róber: Manuel Pablo made his 351 appearance as a starter playing for Depor in liga, and it was the first on this season. It cannot be said that he had a good game, after all he was one of the players that failed in the first goal. The Canarian neither was ready to play for the full 90 minutes and had to leave after picking a knee injury.

His exit allowed the league debut of Róber Suarez at Primera. The 21-year-old centre-back had already played in Copa, but this was his first league appearance with the first team. Big challenge as the team was playing in a complicate stadium as he was only going out from an injury, he had a good job performing as a left-back, though he picked a muscle injury.
