SEASON 2015/16, PLAYERS’ ANALYSIS – DEFENDERS

20 May 2016
The arrival of Arribas complemented the presence of Sidnei, while the coach lived hard times dealing with Lopo and Luisinho. Centre-back Róber was the only Fabril’s player with minutes in liga.

Nine defenders performed with the first team during the season 2015/16, Víctor Sánchez found a perfect couple in Arribas-Sidnei, bur lived a nightmare with Lopo and Luisinho. The sides continue to be one of the weak spots of the team. The following is the analysis of the defenders that played in liga with Deportivo.

Manuel Pablo -Oldie- (175 minutes on the season). Once again the captain of Deportivo suffered injuries that restrained his participation with the team. He started the pre-season injured and didn’t play any minute at the beginning of the season. It was until 2016 when he had some minutes in Copa and later took part in three games when Deportivo were going down, he had minutes in the visits to Atlético Madrid and Athletic Bilbao and played the full 90 minutes in the final matchday against Real Madrid.

Laure -Constant- (1,545). This Madrilenian right-back might lack of lot of things on the field, but it’s constant in the trainings, so throughout his career at Depor it was normal to see him pumping out in order to fill a gap. And this time it was the same. Despite been the second choice for his position he managed to play in 23 games, mainly as Juanfran was used in some opportunities as a right winger. Laure ended the season playing as a starter in 4 of the last 5 meetings.

Juanfran Moreno -Multifunctional- (2,683). He was the player at the team that had to perform in three different positions, always without leaving a too convincing impression. The Madrilenian made 35 league appearances, normally acting as a right-back, but also played three times as a left-back and another six as a right winger. An important piece in the defensive puzzle of Víctor Sánchez, though frequently criticized for his lack of aim with the crosses.

Sidnei Rechel -Rock- (2,897). One of the two pillars of the defence. Like in the previous season, the Brazilian left a positive impression with his performance. He was one of the few players that kept the same level after the downfall of the second round. Sidnei played in 33 league games and only missed 5 meetings after getting injured at RCD Espanyol (February 21). He was the third player in la liga with more clearances (190). Perhaps the only stain is that he still missing to score a goal, but it isn’t for not trying. He sought for it until the last day against Real Madrid.

Alejandro Arribas -Dandy- (2,737). This Madrilenian defender arrived during the summer and got a starting place since the first day. He was the perfect companion for Sidnei at the centre of the defence and also kept the same level despite the disastrous second round. He scored twice and his best moment was to net the equalizer in the 2-2 draw with Athletic Club (Oct 18). His lowest moment was the fight with Luisinho and the red card in the derby with RC Celta, precisely the cards were his main problem as he was the second player at the team with more yellows (9).
RCDLC.com rating: 9.0

Albert Lopo -Disappeared- (741). With Sidnei and Arribas having the starring roles at the centre of the defence, the Catalan veteran had one of his worse years at Depor as he barely played. He only took part in ten games and neither matched a decent level with his few performances. To make things worse he was involved in a disciplinary case with coach Víctor and was sidelined from the group during the last three matchdays.

Róber Pier -Promising- (50) The only Fabril’s player that had minutes on the league season. He was picked by Víctor when Sidnei got injured and also when Lopo was banned at the end of the season. It’s hard to judge a player that only had 50 minutes distributed in two games, but this centre-back left a positive impression against Real Madrid after been close to score in a corner-kick action.

Fernando Navarro -Diminished- (2,961). This veteran player arrived during the summer and immediately got the starting role at the left side of the defence. Like many players at the squad his performance was great in the first round, like his immense match at Real Betis (Sept 24), and later fell down in the second part of the league tournament, to the point that the left side turned to be one of the weaknesses at the team. At least he was constant after only missing three games in the league season.
RCDLC.com rating: 7.0

Luisinho -Problematic- (1,089). The arrival of Navarro pulled him to a secondary role and the Portuguese player never liked it. Víctor tried to reconvert him into a left winger, but a series of conflicts with the coach, crowned by the fight with Arribas and his frequent protests, cost him a bigger role on the season. He was reduced to play 20 league games and ended separated from the group.
