Gaizka Garitano is the choice for the bench elected by Depor’s board of directors. He arrived on Thursday to A Coruña and should be confirmed as the new coach during Friday.

40-year-old Gaizka Garitano is the choice that Deportivo have selected for the bench ahead of the season 2015/16.  He arrived on Thursday’s night to A Coruña and should be confirmed as the new coach on Friday. It’s expected that he will sign a one-year contract with the club.

Garitano was one of the three names on the list that advisor Richard Barral presented to the board of directors. The other two were ex-Depor Sergio González and Luis César Sampedro. A fourth name mentioned as a possibility was ex-Valencia Rubén Baraja.

The Basque man is a former midfielder that completed 470 league appearances between 1993 and 2009, though he only played 50 games at the elite (Real Sociedad, 2005-2007). Garitano started his career as a coach in 2010 working for Eibar B.

Two years later he took charge of the first team and lived his greatest moment achieving two consecutive promotions, SD Eibar passed to play from Segunda B to Primera in a matter of 48 months. Then his team reached new goals and ended the first round been the sensation in the league, but later everything fell apart and a terrible second round left the team at the pit. It was a similar situation to what happened to Víctor Sánchez on last season, with the difference that the Basques ended in relegation spots.

The financial situation of Elche CF saved SD Eibar, but Garitano refused to continue coaching the team, so he left and was signed by Real Valladolid. He only spent nine matchdays on the Segunda season 2015/16 and was fired on October 21 after the team had only added 9 points. It was commented that he had a very poor relation with the players and that this was the main factor that caused his exit.

So, Garitano leaves doubts with the fans, because it’s the same situations that caused Víctor’s exit. In one hand the Basque was unable to change a negative streak with SD Eibar, and later had issues with the players at Real Valladolid; the two main problems that killed Víctor’s reputation.

To make things worse Garitano criticized Deportivo in the past; when he was at SD Eibar he criticized that the Galicians had an economic advantage despite its problems, ”We are playing in disadvantage. Other teams are earning more of what they really have and that’s cheating. They are asking 2-1 million to us as a guarantee and we don’t have debts, while we found out that Deportivo and Zaragoza have millions in debts, they don’t pay and are under the lie of the bankruptcy law, and later sign players that worth a lot of money. This is a no sense. Depor, during this winter window, have made four or five signings. We are in disadvantage, because they want us to make an increase of capital. It is not fair.” He commented at the end of the season 2014/15 when SD Eibar was under fire by the LFP as the club’s capital wasn’t matching the requirements of la liga.
