BORGES AND THE COPA AMERICA

13 Jun 2016
Costa Rica didn’t have a good Copa América, it was early eliminated and it left a poor impression. Borges played in all the games and had a starring role in the last meeting against Colombia.

Disappointment in Costa Rica after the elimination from the Copa América Centenario. Los Ticos ended third in Group A with four points in three games. Celso Borges continued to be a key player for coach Óscar Ramirez and was a starter in the three games.

The opening game against Paraguay was boring, with both teams only having a few chances to score, reason why the game ended 0-0. The disaster came in the second game before the United States. Costa Rica was better in big part of the game, but it committed punctual errors in the mark and, after conceding three goals in the first half, it suffered a demolishing 0-4 defeat.

For the last game against Colombia, Costa Rica was needing to see Paraguay defeating USA and later they should achieve a big win in order to advance to the next round, but instead USA defeated Paraguay (1-0), so when the game against Colombia started Costa Rica was already eliminated.

And it turned to be the best game of Costa Rica in the tournament, truly Colombia played with substitutes, but the Central American team cleared the pale impression left in the first two games with three goals and a good football (3-2 win).

Borges had a discrete performance in the first two games performing as a centre midfielder, in the third he was one of the best players (named MVP by the organisation of the tournament) and was even involved in two of the three goals. In the first he assisted Johan Venegas with a 20-meter pass during a counterattack, while he scored the second firing from the edge of the area after a drilling pass by Bryan Oviedo. He was replaced at minute 77.

With this elimination, Borges is now on vacation and should join the pre-season of Deportivo at the end of July, though for now the new coaching staff hasn’t revealed yet the dates and plans for the pre-season. Borges is the last player from the first team that ends his participation during the season 2015/16.
