Squad news

The pre-season of Deportivo ended on Saturday after the game with Sporting Gijón. The good thing is that new coach Gartiano already has a full squad available, but he still has to polish the physical aspect and the tactical ideas.

More lights than shadows after Deportivo ended the pre-season stage. Deportivo played ten friendly games during this period; it won six of the meetings: SD Negreira (10-1), Racing de Ferrol (2-0), Real Oviedo (2-0), CD Verín (3-0), Feirense CF (1-0) and Villarreal CF (2-0). Two games ended in a draw: Peñarol CF (2-2) and Sporting Gijón (1-1), while the team suffered two defeats: RC Celta (0-2) and Desportivo Chaves (0-1).

The stage included a mini-tour in Uruguay, a friendly game in Portugal and in the rest of the time the team was training at Abegondo and playing matches in Galicia and the last one in Asturias. 34 players had minutes during the friendly games and, from this list, 22 will be at the first team ahead of the new season that’s about to start.

And the true is that there are more positive conclusions than negative aspects; the first positive news from the pre-season is that new coach Gaizka Garitano already has a defined squad composed by 22 men. The club already completed all the expected arrivals and exits, which is a big success with two weeks pending in the market window. It means the coach will have his full choices available since matchday 01, always remembering that a late exit (Lucas or Sidnei) could force the club to make an unexpected additional signing.

The second positive news from the pre-season is the injuries. Apart from minor cases the team hasn’t suffered any serious case like it happened last season with Fabricio, so the team is fresh ahead of the debut.  The only two cases had on the pre-season were Juanfran and Fayçal Fajr.

Juanfran suffered a muscle problem at the beginning and it was feared that he was going to miss the full pre-season, but the player recovered before the expectations and is even possible to see him as a starter in the debut. In the case of Fajr, a knock pulled him out of the last friendly, but it’s a minor case. The only men that won’t be ready for the debut is Marlos Moreno, who will join the trainings until Thursday.

The third and final positive conclusion is that the coach have found three systems, which is important especially taking in mind that Garitano has just landed at Deportivo. He will rely in the 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-2, with the first two looking as the main ones to be used according to what was saw within the last two friendly games.

The negative news is related to the preparation of the team ahead of la liga. Despite the coach has had a full squad available and that he already chose the systems, it simply doesn’t look prepared yet. In the Teresa Herrera match Deportivo played good football within the first twenty minutes, but later looked tired and needing to polish some facets. So, the team will reach the first game in liga still needing to improve the physical condition and the development of tactical ideas wanted by the coach.
