Squad news

Fifteen days are left in the transfer window and Deportivo have practically closed the squad to compete in liga. At this point there are only three subjects that remain pending.

Deportivo have clearly progressed in recent years in terms of the configuration of the first team. Exactly three years ago the club was in a delicate situation, with coach Fernando Vázquez preparing the first matchday in Segunda been forced to pick five players from Depor B (David Gómez, Insua, Uxío, Juan Carlos & Luis Fernández).

Now, new boss Gaizka Garitano sees how his Deportivo’s squad is practically closed before debuting against SD Eibar in the new Primera season and with fifteen days still left in the transfer window. It’s a huge advantage to have everything prepared comparing the situation with other clubs, especially the ones that are also targeting the permanence and that are still searching for reinforcements.

Deportivo made twelve signings so far: goalkeepers Przemysław Tytoń and Rubén Martínez, right-back Juanfran Moreno, centre-back Raúl Albentosa, wingers Bruno Gama and Emre Çolak, centre midfielders Fayçal Fajr and Guilherme, playmaker Carles Gil, plus attackers Borja Valle, Marlos Moreno and Florin Andone.

Even the exits are already solved. Nine players under contract have already decided their future. Six were loaned to other clubs: Pablo Insua (Leganés), Juan Dominguez (Mallorca), Oriol Riera (Osasuna), Róber (Levante), Bicho (Racing de Ferrol) and Saúl García (Girona), then Miguel Cardoso and Luis Fernández rescinded their contracts, while veteran Manuel Pablo retired.

But it’s inevitable to think that more moves could occur in the remaining fifteen days, and some of them could have a deep impact at the squad. More specifically there are three cases that remain pending:

1- Luisinho: President Tino Fernández said at the end of last season that left-back Luisinho was going out of the team after the disciplinary problems that unleashed an internal breakdown. Three months later things have radically changed as the Portuguese is set to stay. The rumour is that the agent of the player has refused any offer and the club’s officials already admitted that there’s no other way than to keep him.

Garitano and players like Juanfran have calmed the public opinion saying that nothing will happen and that, for the moment, Luisinho is not causing more problems inside the squad. Still, the coach didn’t rule out the chance of his exit after affirming that the decision is to have Luisinho and Navarro for the left-back position, but if he leaves then a new signing will be necessary.

2- Lucas Pérez: The striker seems more in than out of Deportivo. After unleashing rumours for not been picked for the Teresa Herrera, everything is now settled and, despite a last-minute offer cannot be ruled out, the agent of Lucas, Rodrigo Lobelle, assures that the player believes that he is staying.

“You cannot assure anything in this life, but I would say that Lucas will be available for the coach for Friday. At this moment we don’t have any offer, and in order to see Lucas leaving on this or in next weeks before you will need to have the interest of another club, then we will have to talk with Deportivo and then the board will have to accept the offer. The player is mentalized in staying in A Coruña, which isn’t any problem been from the city and Deportivista. It fulfils him.” He said to La Voz de Galicia during the weekend.

3- Sidnei: A key player at defence and that’s rumoured to be the target of several clubs like Valencia CF. The problem for Deportivo is that the major part of his rights belongs to SL Benfica, so a final decision isn’t totally pending on them. They could only match the offer of the interested clubs in case the Portuguese outfit decides to sell him. At this point there are no solid offers, but the defender could be a last-minute target.

The current squad of Deportivo is composed by 22 players, exactly what Garitano wanted in order to make room for the players from Fabril:

Goalkeepers: Lux, Tytoń and Rubén Martínez
Defenders: Juanfran, Laure, Sidnei, Arribas, Albentosa, Luisinho & Navarro.
Midfielders: Álex Bergantiños, Borges, Guilherme, Pedro Mosquera, Fayçal Fajr, Emre Çolak, Bruno Gama & Carles Gil.
Attackers: Borja Valle, Lucas Pérez, Andone & Marlos Moreno.
