REVIEW: BETIS 0 – DEPORTIVO 0 (LIGA)

27 Aug 2016
Depor missed aim and ideas in attack, the solid defence helped to clinch a point in the first away game on the season; still the Galicians had the best opportunities to score.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Gaizka Garitano made two changes to the lineup of the opening matchday; with Lucas in London before signing for Arsenal, Florin Andone was having  his first appearance as a starter. Same thing for Emre Çolak, who played before Carles Gil.

The draw was a 4-2-3-1 with Lux at the goal, Juanfran covered the right side on defence, Navarro played on the left, Albentosa and Sidnei were the centre-backs, Guilherme and Mosquera were the centre midfielders, Bruno Gama attacked from the right wing, Çolak did it from the left, Fayçal Fajr was the playmaker and Andone the central attacker.

Real Betis presented the expected 4-4-2 figure with Rubén Castro and Toni Sanabria as the offensive references. Depor had to wear a black kit for the game as the referee didn’t allow the first three kits, apparently it was too similar to Betis’ kit.

FIRST HALF
Moved half, but only with a few scoring chances. Deportivo were solid in defense, but later it missed ideas to take advantage of the cracks at Betis’ defence. The locals were pressing up front, but later missed quality to surpass the Galician wall.

The game started with a high pace, Depor begun having the ball and pressing at the moment of losing it, so the actions were taking place at the half of Betis within these first minutes. Later the Andalusians started to have more control and thus earned the first corner in the game, which ended with Piccini having the first chance in the match as he headed the ball out (4’).

Depor had the first big chance in the game, it came at minute 12 as Fajr released a lateral free-kick that almost reached the path of Mosquera at the goal line, but Fabián cleared the danger first. The locals responded with the first shot in target in the game, after several crosses Petros picked the ball at the edge of the area and his low attempt was blocked by Lux (14’).

At minute 23, Bruno Gama attempted from the edge of the area, but he missed the target.  Depor and Betis were playing a good game, with speed and offensive intention, the problem is that both sides were not creating clear chances.

At Depor, the team was well placed in defence and the transition to offensive positions was also fine, the problem is that the plays were ending in penetrations by the wings and crosses that always missed the target; actually only one of the fifteen crosses completed in the half met the target (Juanfran missed five).

And that only good cross ended in the only chance for Depor within the last fifteen minutes, it was made by Juanfran and ended with Bruno Gama firing on target, but the ball was deflected by rival (41’).  Betis pressed harder at the end of the first part, but their only clear opportunity was a deflected attempt of Fabián that went out close to the right post of Lux (44’).

SECOND HALF
Things were harder for Depor in the second part; Betis pressed, especially after the entry of Musonda, and only a solid defence, led by Sidnei and Lux helped to grab a valuable point. Regardless the local pressure, the half ended with the impression that Deportivo had the best opportunities.

The visiting side had the first chance in the half, it was a counterattack in which Andone made a solo-play on the left wing; in the end Bruno Gama missed the target from the edge of the area (47’). Two minutes later the Portuguese winger had a new chance to score, he collected the ball after a rebound inside the area and incredibly his shot went out when local goalie Adán was already defeated. That was one of the best chances witnessed in this match.

Betis reacted and Joaquin created two good opportunities that were intercepted first by Sidnei and later by Albentosa. Sanabria missed the target from the edge of the area (54’), and two minutes later the Andalusians had one of their two best chances through left-back Durmisi, who made a great play eluding Juanfran twice and his shot was saved by Lux (56’). The Argentine goalie made two key saves in the game.

Depor’s first modification was the entry of Celso Borges for Guilherme, but what changed the game was the entry of Charly Musonda , the loanee from Chelsea was the company that Joaquin needed and soon the Andalusians started to enjoy of opportunities and more possession; Musonda had his first chance after missing the target in is first play in the game (68’).

The best opportunity in the game for Los Verdiblancos came at minute 63, a confusing play in which Joaquin and Musonda penetrated by the right, but Juanfran arrived before Sanabria and cleared the danger to corner-kick.

Luisinho replaced Çolak, the Turkish had a grey game after missing a couple of balls at midfield, then Borja Valle replaced a tired Andone. The Romanian ended exhausting after running a lot.

Betis pressed and looked more dangerous within the last ten minutes, but the best chance in this frame was for Depor. It came in the stoppage time after Borja Valle headed the ball out after a cross by Juanfran (90+2’).

AFTER THE GAME
Not a good game by Depor, but at least solid enough in defence to pick up a point on the road.  The team looked fine in the first half, but the lack of aim in the crossed avoided creating scoring chances. There were two big opportunities in the second, half in which Betis were better. Sidnei was the best player and Lux made two important saves.

There’s a break in la liga now with the international games; Deportivo return to competition until Sunday, September 11 with the home game before Athletic Club (20h30 CET).
